    • A safety system for electronic devices having multiple power inputs includes dedicating a different power detector to each power input and includes disabling all of the power inputs upon detection that one input has been disabled. Each of the power inputs is typically a power cord that provides electrical energy to a discrete electrical circuit. Thus, the safety system permits the electronic device to use a different power supply for each electrical circuit, while ensuring that there is no erroneous assumption that disconnecting one of the power cords will de-energize the entire electronic device. In the preferred embodiment, the paths to the power supplies are disabled by opening relay switches, with the switches that are specific to a power cord being in a logical AND arrangement.

    • An H.323 client terminal (102) according to an embodiment of the invention employs primary and secondary H.323 control units or state machines (110a, 110b). The primary control unit (110a) sends signaling messages to a primary gatekeeper (108a) and triggers the secondary control unit (110b) to send a message with an appropriate correlation identifier directly to a second client terminal. The primary control unit (110a) establishes a call per standard H.323 protocols. The secondary control unit (110b) also establishes a direct signaling connection to the second client terminal as back up. However, no media channels are established for this backup signaling. The secondary control unit (110b) checks the status of the call with the primary control unit (110a). If the call signaling on the primary control unit (110a) is proceeding normally, no further action is taken. If the call signaling with the primary gatekeeper (108a) fails, the secondary control unit (110b) takes over the signaling communication via the direct signaling channel.

    • A method, apparatus and communication system for efficiently and economically supporting a multipoint videoconference call is described. The multimedia conference unit determines which communication unit is a dominant communication unit, with the other communication units being thus determined to be subordinate communication units. The multimedia conference unit then commands the subordinate communication units to suppress a video portion of their respective signals, such that the digital signal processing analysis by the multimedia conference unit required to support the multipoint conference is reduced and network bandwidth used is minimized.

    • A network node and a method of dynamically reconfiguring routes of established connections in a communications system operate to provide the optimal path for a new connection based on a priority status of the new connection. The optimal path is provided even when a communication link on the optimal path does not have a sufficient amount of available bandwidth to accommodate the new connection. The network node operates in conjunction with other network nodes in the system to reroute one or more established connections that have reserved bandwidth on a communication link on the optimal route and have a lower priority status than the new connection, thereby increasing the available bandwidth on the communication link to accommodate the new connection. The network node also performs conventional functions of a router. The network node and the method can be implemented in any communications system where information is transmitted in packets, blocks, frames or cells. The network node includes a reroute-signal generator, a network monitor and a reservation unit that operate with a CPU of the node to perform the rerouting operation.

    • A method and device are configured to generate alerts that are varied based upon whether an incoming communication is perceived to be mode (i.e., a non-urgency mode), with different tactile-based patterns being dependent upon the selection of the mode. That is, the patterns of the alerts for providing notification of urgent communications are distinguishable from the patterns of alerts for providing notification of non-urgent communications. In the preferred embodiment, the communications device allows a user to assign particular vibrational patterns to specific sources of incoming communications, so that the vibration pattern identifies the urgency pattern and the original source of the communication. In the pager application, the pager may be configured by a user to uniquely associate a particular callback number with a first alert that is used when the pager is in the urgency mode and a second alert that is used when the pager is in the normal mode. The indication of perceived urgency can be provided by the user of the device or by a caller. In applications in which the user identifies perceived urgency, specific callback numbers may be associated with an urgent status, while all other numbers are associated with being non-urgent. Where a caller provides the input for identifying perceived urgency, an interactive voice response (IVR) unit may be used at the service provider of the particular communications device.

    • A method and a system for handling calls includes utilizing a delay calculation module to calculate a transmission delay between first and second terminals over a voice-over-data-network, such as the Internet. A local call processor determines if the transmission delay exceeds a predetermined threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, voice transmission quality over the Internet is not sufficient to support high quality transmissions for the call and a call router places the call over an alternate network, such as a Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN). In a preferred embodiment, the transmission delay calculation is a two-tiered process in which a preliminary round trip delay is first calculated to screen for large transmission delays which do not include a delay component introduced by a remote call processor. If the preliminary round trip delay exceeds a round trip delay threshold, the call is routed over the PSTN. If the preliminary round trip delay falls within a predetermined range below the threshold, the delay calculation module calculates an end-to-end echo which includes a delay introduced by the remote call processor. If the end-to-end echo is below an end-to-end echo delay, the call is routed over the Internet. Otherwise, the call is routed over the PSTN. After a call is routed over the Internet, the round trip delay and the end-to-end echo are monitored and the call is transferred if either the round trip delay or the end-to-end echo exceeds its respective threshold.

    • A data communication system and method that reduces conversion distortion on data calls between locations that encode telephone signals according to different conversion standards is disclosed. The data communication system (40) includes a first switch (44) and a processor (50). The first switch (44) receives a telephone call carrying a first analog modulated data signal, and converts the first analog modulated data signal to a first digitized data signal according to a first conversion standard. Next, the processor (50) converts the first digitized data signal back to the first analog modulated data signal and then demodulates the first analog modulated data signal to recover the original data signal. The processor (50) thereafter modulates the original data signal to produce a second analog modulated data signal and converts the second analog modulated data signal to a second digitized data signal according to a second digital conversion standard prior to transmission of the data signal to a receiver of the telephone call.
