    • A fuel cap is provided with a vent system for lowering the actuation pressure of its internal pressure-relief valve in response to rotation of the fuel cap relative to the filler neck in a cap-removal direction. The vent system provides an operative connection between the cap handle and a pressure-relief valve in the cap. The vent system includes a spring for applying a closure-inducing force urging the pressure-relief valve against its valve seat to close a vent aperture in the cap, and a control system for regulating the magnitude of the closure-inducing force in response to rotation of the handle in a cap-removal direction. Use of the control system to lower the magnitude of the closure-inducing force permits the pressure-relief valve to move away from the valve seat to a venting position upon exposure to excessive fuel vapor pressure in the filler neck so that a fuel vapor-venting outlet through the cap is established during a removal of the fuel cap from the filler neck. This vent system facilitates venting of the tank past the pressure-relief valve in a controlled manner past the pressure-relief valve prior to breaking a primary fuel and fuel vapor seal between the fuel cap and the filler neck.

    • A pressure/vacuum valve assembly for a fuel tank filler neck comprises a pressure-release valve member, a vacuum-relief valve, and a pressure-release control member in a vent passageway. The vent passageway has an axially outwardly facing surface and a radially inwardly facing surface. A yieldable control spring urges the pressure-release valve member normally to close and seal the vent passageway. The pressure-release control member has an axially inwardly facing surface which forms a first restricted opening for the flow of fuel vapors. The control member has a radially outwardly facing surface which forms a second restricted opening with the radially inwardly facing surface of the vent passageway. The pressure-release valve member is urged in opposition to the control spring to open the vent passageway in response to a predetermined superatmospheric pressure and allow fuel vapor to flow in the first and second restricted openings. A relatively small increase in pressure in the restricted opening produces a large force against surfaces of both the pressure-release valve member and the pressure-release control member in opposition to the control spring to rapidly increase the flow of fuel vapor through the vent passageway. The combined surfaces of both the valve member and control member is about 350% greater than the surface of the valve member which is initially exposed to the vapor pressure.

    • A fuel cap leakage tester is provided comprising a fuel cap support, a pressure source, and a monitor. The fuel cap support is formed to included a test chamber and is adapted to receive a fuel cap to be tested in the test chamber to establish a pressurizable region, therein and a sealed connection between the fuel cap to be tested and the fuel cap support. The monitor is positioned to communicate with the pressurizable region formed in the fuel cap support and is configured to measure air pressure in the pressurizable region. The fuel cap leakage tester further comprises a system for communicating a flow of pressurized air from the pressure source to the pressurizable region with a predetermined pressure drop of the pressurized air therebetween. The monitor measures the pressure level of the pressurized air in the pressurizable region to determine whether the fuel cap to be tested meets or exceeds a predetermined leakage flow rate.
