    • System for providing information to a user via a communication network are provided. One such system incorporates an integrated appliance that includes a housing. The housing mounts a display, a telephone, a keyboard and a first passthrough communication portal. The display is operative to display information to the user. The telephone is located adjacent to the display and is operative to provide voice communication to and from the user. The keyboard is located adjacent to and in front of the display and is operative to receive inputs from the user. The first passthrough communication portal includes a first receptacle located adjacent to the display, a second receptacle and a communication link. The first receptacle is operative to receive a communication connector of a computing device. The second receptacle is operative to receive another communication connector for communicating with a communication network such that the communication link propagates information between the computing device and the communication network.

    • The invention provides novel amino acid compounds of use in detecting and evaluating brain and body tumors. These compounds combine the advantageous properties of α-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) analogs namely, their rapid uptake and prolonged retention in tumors with the properties of halogen sustituents, including certain useful halogen isotopes such as fluorine-18, iodine-123, iodine-124, iodine-125, iodine-131, bromine-75, bromine-76, bromine-77, bromine-82, astatine-210, astatine-211, and other astatine isotopes. In addition the compounds can be labeled with technetium and rhenium isotopes using known chelation complexes. The amino acid compounds disclosed herein have a high specificity for target sites when administered to a subject in vivo. Preferred amino acid compounds include [18F] FAMP, ([18F]5a) and [18F]N-MeFAMP, ([18F]5b). The invention further features pharmaceutical compositions comprised of an α-amino acid moiety attached to eiher a four, five or a six member carbon-chain ring. The labeled amino acid compounds are useful as imaging agents in detecting and/or monitoring tumors in a subject by Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT).

    • Leaks or thin spots in containers, as well as mechanical faults, e.g. worn bearings, are detected by an ultrasonic energy indicator that includes a modulator that heterodynes ultrasonic signals received by a transducer and creates an audio signal related thereto. The transducer includes a series arrangement of piezoelectric crystals feeding a field-effect transistor amplifier and the modulator operates in an amplitude modulation, suppressed-carrier mode which can be stabilized by a feedback loop. For indicating the presence of the audio signal, either headphones or a meter or both are employed. When leaks in a container are being detected, an ultrasonic generator is used which varies its output frequency slowly over a band of frequencies. The leak detection technique can be improved by applying a thin layer of a liquid to the container surface so that pressure introduced into the container causes the formation and bursting of bubbles in the liquid that results in the production of ultrasonic energy.
