    • An access terminal establishes a session with a first radio access network (RAN). As a result, the access terminal receives a Unicast Access Terminal Identifier (UATI) assigned by the first RAN and establishes configuration settings for radio communications between the access terminal and the first RAN. The access terminal moves from the first RAN to a second RAN. Before the access terminal has a session established with the second RAN, the access terminal receives a request from a user to originate a call. In response, the access terminal sends the second RAN a connection request that includes the UATI assigned by the first RAN. The second RAN evaluates the UATI included in the connection request and determines that it was previously assigned to the access terminal by another RAN. Based on this determination, the second RAN grants the connection request by assigning a traffic channel to the access terminal.

    • An access network may receive an incoming communication for an idle access terminal having a last-known location in a first service area of the access network. In response to receiving the incoming communication, the access network may determine whether the last-known location is proximate to a border between the first service area and a second service area of the access network. If so, the access network may define a border paging area encompassing one or more coverage areas within the second service area that are proximate to the last-known location. In turn, the access network may determine a representative paging-channel occupancy of the border paging area. Based on the representative paging-channel occupancy, the access network may then select a time at which to initiate a border page of the access terminal in the border paging area and then perhaps initiate the border page at the selected time.

    • An access terminal may be requesting from an access network data in a first coverage area at a first data rate, which is determined based on at least one signal condition of the first coverage area. The access terminal may then decide to switch from requesting data in a first coverage area to requesting data in a second coverage area. In response, the access terminal may (a) request data in the first coverage area at an increased second data rate and (b) send to the access network a notification of the decision to switch from requesting data in a first coverage area to requesting data in a second coverage area. After sending the notification, the access terminal may request data in the second coverage area at a third data rate, which is determined based on at least one signal condition of the second coverage area.

    • Methods and systems for assigning a wireless communication device to a carrier frequency are presented. In an exemplary embodiment, a radio access network (RAN) radiates to define one or more wireless coverage areas using at least two different carrier frequencies. A given wireless communication device (WCD) seeks to engage in a call, and accordingly transmits a probe message to the RAN. In response to receiving the probe message, and based at least on information associated with the probe message, the RAN determines an initial carrier frequency assignment for the given WCD. Preferably, this initial carrier frequency assignment is performed to balance load across at least some of the at least two different carrier frequencies. The RAN then transmits an indication of the carrier frequency assignment to the given WCD. The given WCD may then tune to the assigned carrier frequency and conduct communications using the assigned carrier frequency.
