    • A charging device includes a charging member disposed opposite to a surface of an image carrier. The image carrier is charged by applying a voltage to the charging member, and the charging member includes a substrate and a resistor layer thereon. The resistor layer is disposed with two spacers contacting with the image carrier, so that a gap is created between the image carrier and the resistor layer between the two spacers, wherein width variation of the gap with time is prevented. The end portions of the resistor layer of the charging member protrude above the resistor layer between them, and the spacers are constituted by protrudent fractions of the end portions of the resistor layer.

    • An image forming device includes a plurality of developing devices and a photosensitive drum. Each of the developing devices includes a developer carrying roller. One of the developing devices is moved to a developing position confronting the photosensitive drum which is formed with a latent image. A first developing bias including a d.c. component and an a.c. component is applied to the developer carrying roller and developer on the developer carrying roller is rendered in contact with the latent image on the photosensitive drum so that the latent image is developed. On the other hand, when the developer on the developer carrying roller comes in contact with and separates from the photosensitive drum due to the movement of the developing device, a second developing bias is applied to the developer carrying roller. The second developing bias generates an electric field where the developer on the developer carrying roller is more reluctant to move toward the photosensitive drum as compared with the first developing bias. The second developing bias may include only a d.c. component.

    • An image forming apparatus of the present invention includes an intermediate image transfer belt to which a toner image is to be transferred from an image carrier, an image transferring device for transferring the toner image from the intermediate image transfer belt to a sheet, and a fixing device for fixing the toner image on the sheet. When the length of the sheet in the direction of conveyance is smaller than a distance between the image transferring device and the fixing device, a matching circuit varies only the speeds of the image transferring device and fixing device, but does not vary the speed of a device that executes a step preceding the image transfer step. The matching device then sets an interval between consecutive sheets matching with the varied speeds of the image transferring device and fixing device, thereby matching opposite sides with respect to the image transfer step to each other as to the number of sheets to be conveyed.

    • An image is generated by exposing the surface to a scanning laser beam in accordance with an image forming process. The intermediate image transfer member receives the image from the image carrying member and transfers it onto a recording sheet. A controller detects the voltage of the photoconductor rotating in each of the process line speeds and determines optimum values of the grid voltage of the charging member and the amount of laser beam exposure from the laser exposure unit to obtain the respective required voltage level used by the grid adjusting member, and the after-exposure voltage used by the exposure adjusting member, on the basis of the detected voltage and with reference to information included in a reference table.

    • An image forming apparatus of the type producing a single composite color image on a paper which is transported by a belt by transferring image components of different colors to the paper in register with each other. The apparatus reduces with a simple construction the positional deviation of the image components which occurs in an intended direction of paper transport. Recording devices individually adapted for black, cyan, magenta and yellow are arranged side by side. Pattern images for measurement each being associated with a respective one of those colors are formed on the belt. A timing at which each of the pattern images arrives is sensed and counted. The count is compared with a reference value to calculate an amount of deviation. Write start timing signals each being associated with a particular color are generated which are individually variable on the basis of the deviation calculated. The pattern images of the respective colors are each generated by using a write start timing associated with the color as a reference, and the pattern to be provided by any of the recording devices is outputted on a downstream side of the belt relative to the pattern to be provided by another recording device which is located downstream of the first-mentioned recording device.

Latent images formed on a photoreceptor drum are developed by developing units in a revolver developing unit, toner images thus formed are primarily transferred in an overlapped state onto an intermediate transfer belt in a primary transfer section, and the thus primarily transferred toner images are together transferred secondarily onto a transfer paper. In this image forming system, a revolving operation of the revolver developing unit is controlled so that an area on the photoreceptor drum with which a developer contained in a Bk developing unit comes into contact upon 22.5° revolution of the revolver developing unit from a home position with consequent movement of the Bk developing unit to a developing position contacts a not-to-be-transferred area on the intermediate transfer belt in the primary transfer section. By so doing, toner stain caused by the Bk developing unit which has moved to the developing position does not exert any influence on the toner images formed on the intermediate transfer belt.
