    • Two light beams are incident on the same position on a surface of an object (105) to be measured obliquely from upper sides facing each other, and positions at which the reflecting light beams are incident on respective predetermined detection surfaces are detected by position detectors (102 and 104) for outputting respectively as position detection signals. The displacement of the surface to be measured is detected by obtaining the difference between or the sum of respective position detection signals so as to cancel the components in the directions opposite to each other out of the components indicating changes from the reference position included in respective position detection signals.

Staple detecting holes are provided at bottom faces of both of them, and a cartridge identifying hole for identifying a type of a cartridge is formed at one of them. A cartridge identifying sensor and a staple detecting sensor are provided at the inside of an electric stapler. Charge of the staple cartridge, determination of a cartridge type and presence or absence of a staple at the inside of the staple cartridge are detected by signals of the sensors.

    • A method of making a multilayer optical disc of a type formed by laminating a plurality of signal layers each having a spiral or concentric pattern of a series of pits so that information can be read by irradiating any one of the signal layers with a playback laser from a surface of a substrate of the optical disc and reading waveforms reproduced therefrom. A master disc having a pit pattern formed thereon by exposing to a modulated exposure light pulse train is prepared for each of signal recorded layers. Based on this master disc, a mold is then prepared having a pit pattern which is a replica of the pit pattern on the master disc. Using the molds, respective replicas are formed and bonded together in face-to-face relation to thereby provide the multilayer optical disc. The series of pits on each signal layers in the master disc has a pit width or a pit length so chosen as to permit a signal reproduced from each signal layer to represent a waveform substantially identical with that of a signal which has been recorded.
