    • When a message having at least one attachment is obtained for indexing, it is indexed as N+1 separate documents, where N is the number of attached documents. If the message is part of a message thread, then information regarding the last message in the thread is retrieved, and search index attachment meta data for the last message is extracted. A unique identifier is computed for the newly obtained attachments, and used to search for matches in the attachments for the last message in the thread. If there is a match, then the newly obtained attachment is not indexed, but the unique identifier of the previously indexed matching attachment is added to a body index document for the new message. A unique identifier associated with the new message body is also added to a list of parent identifiers associated with the attachment. If a search is subsequently issued that matches the contents of the attachment, all documents whose parent identifiers are listed in the attachment document meta data will be returned as matches. If an attachment is obtained for a message is not part of a previous message thread, or if a newly obtained attachment is not a match with any previously obtained attachment within the message thread to which it belongs, then the attachment is indexed into the search index, and its unique identifier is included in the index document for the newly obtained message body.

    • A system that enables a user to conveniently reduce the size of one or more mailboxes stored on the client computer system. The user can indicate that “unimportant” email messages are to be removed from one or more mailboxes. Unimportant email messages are automatically removed before important ones. To calculate the importance of a message for a given user, message attributes such as users associated with and/or terms contained in the message are compared against a personal interest profile associated with the local user. Additionally, dates associated with the message, such as when the message was added to the mailbox, and/or when the message was last read, may be used to further determine message importance. The size of a message may also be considered when determining whether a message should be removed.

    • The example embodiments relate to a method for handling and analyzing emails. In accordance with at least one example embodiment, a control character specifying a computer application may be determined to be included in an email message. The control character in the email may be compared to a library of control characters, such that each control character in the library corresponds to a command. If the control character in the email corresponds to a control character in the library, the command associated with the character may be executed, which may display a user interface in the email program, the user interface including at least two user-selectable actions specific to the computer application. The user may select an action from the user interface, which may execute the computer application in accordance with the selected action and automatically authenticate the user onto the computer application.

    • A method and system for preventing recipients from being added and/or removed from a message thread in an e-mail and/or calendaring application. Recipients of a thread message may be allowed to seek and obtain permission from a thread originator to insert a recipient to and/or remove a recipient from the thread. The originating user of a message thread can prevent insertion and/or removal of recipients in an e-mail message thread and/or a calendaring system invitation message by selecting from corresponding message composition user interface options. A mechanism persistently registers the recipient removal and/or insertion settings provided by the originating user, for example as settings stored in and conveyed with the messages themselves. The originating user can permit non-originating users to insert and/or remove recipients from the thread. The originating user can select an option in the message composition user interface that requires and/or allows non-originating users to request permission to insert and/or remove a recipient to a thread. The permission request is forwarded to the originating user, who can then accept or reject the request. The originating user can also expressly list or otherwise indicate which user(s) cannot be inserted into the message thread, and/or which recipients cannot be removed from the message thread.

    • A system for automatically providing notifications to a user regarding interesting content, which automatically collects information regarding persons that are important to the user, as well as indications of important content sources. The important content sources are then monitored for actions performed by one of the important persons for the user, and notifications are generated to the user in the event that the important person performs an action on a document or other information item stored in the important content source. Important persons for a user may be determined through a communication application used by the user, such as an electronic mail program, instant messaging program, or the like, in response to indications of persons that the user has either sent messages to and/or received messages from. The notifications may be provided through the user's communication application, by electronic mail messages, instant messages, or the like. The notification may include a name, identifier, or other indication of the important person that performed the action on the important content source. Notifications may be provided to the user in response to any specific kind of action by the important persons on an important content source, such as create operations, modify operations, and/or delete operations.

    • A system for blending synchronous and asynchronous computer communication applications that determines when a user of a synchronous communication application, such as an instant messaging application, attempts to send a message to another user that is unavailable for synchronous communications, and that forwards the message from the synchronous communication application to an asynchronous communication application for delivery. The forwarded message may be an email message, and the system may operate to determine a destination electronic mail address of the destination user for inclusion in the forwarded message, and include an indication in the forwarded message that it has been forwarded from the synchronous communication application. This indication enables the asynchronous communication application to perform special processing with regard to the forwarded message.
