    • A direct drive for a drill bit in a drill string has a fluid-operated motor within a drive section connected by a gear section to a bearing section whose inner tube is coupled to the drill bit to accommodate axial displacement of the drill bit within the outer tube, spring elements are braced against a radial bearing for the inner tube which has at least one axially defined race. The coupling between the inner tube and the gearing also accommodates such axial displacement and a reservoir for oil is located between the drive and gear sections so that oil can be fed to the gearing, the bearings and to an axial bearing in an annular oil-filled space between the drive and gear sections.

    • The transmission ratio of a multiple-speed hub for a bicycle or like vehicle may be changed by axially shifting the ring gear of a planetary gear transmission in the hub shell against the restraint of a return spring. A pawl on the ring gear and/or ratchet teeth on the hub shell have cooperating engagement faces which are obliquely inclined relative to the hub axis in such a manner that the driving force transmitted by the pawl to the ring gear has an axial component in the direction of the return spring action, thereby further axially securing the ring gear in at least one speed position of the hub, minimizing avoidable clearances, and reducing wear of the gear elements.

    • A Venturi Cooler for flue gas desulphurization devices sprays water through water spray nozzles on pipes positioned perpendicularly to the longitudinal flow direction of the cooler. It is important for the effectiveness of the diffused water that the speed of the flue gas does not fall below a certain limit. A simple adjustment of the cross section of the Venturi cooler to the respective flue gas amount can be achieved by arranging movable baffles on the pipes. The baffles are positionable to reduce the cross section of the Venturi cooler and leave the openings of the water spray nozzles free. They advantageously comprise rotatable sleeves surrounding the pipes and have rotatable flaps for fast adjustment of the cross section.

    • A crash helmet for use by motorcycle drivers or riders has a rigid shell; a first flexible acoustic tube a first section of which extends into and has a bell horn in the region of the mouth-protecting part of the shell, and a second section extending from the shell through the opening in the neck-surrounding part of the shell; a second flexible acoustic tube a first section of which extends into and has a sound-intensifying terminal portion in the region of an ear-protecting part of the shell, and a second section extending outwardly through the aforementioned opening of the shell; first and second additional flexible acoustic tubes respectively corresponding to the second and first tubes and having first sections installed in the shell of a second crash helmet; and a quick-release coupling respectively connecting the second sections of the first and second tubes with the second sections of the second and first additional tubes. The first sections of the tubes are embedded in or secured to the padding at the inner side of the respective shell.
