    • An apparatus for making resistivity measurements near a drill bit includes a tool body, a transmitter deployed on the tool body, a receiver deployed on the tool body and at an axial distance from the transmitter, and a transmitting signal coupler coupled to the transmitter antenna and the receiver. The transmitter generates electrical signals and converts the electrical signals into electromagnetic signals to be transmitted. The receiver measures the amplitudes and phases of the electromagnetic signals received from the transmitter. The transmitting signal coupler couples a portion of the electrical signals from the transmitter antenna and measures the amplitudes and phases of the coupled electrical signals. Amplitude attenuation and phase shift between the electromagnetic signals received at the receiver and the electrical signals coupled at the transmitting signal coupler are computed for calculating resistivity.

    • Multi-array laterolog tool systems and methods acquire a set of array measurements sufficient to provide laterolog tool measurements of differing array sizes. Such systems and method offer multiple depths of investigation while offering greater measurement stability in borehole environments having high resistivity contrasts. In at least some system embodiments, a wireline or LWD tool body has a center electrode positioned between multiple pairs of guard electrodes and a pair of return electrodes. The tool's electronics provide a current from the center electrode to the pair of return electrodes and currents from each pair of guard electrodes to the pair of return electrodes. Each of the currents may be distinguishable by frequency or distinguishable by some other means. This novel arrangement of currents provides a complete set of measurements that enables one tool to simultaneously emulate a whole range of laterolog tools.

    • How much is the net benefit of treating an individual: cost-effective, very small, or even negative? To address this question, a methodology for developing an incremental effect model based on randomized test data is provided. The concept of an incremental effect area index is introduced for measuring the model's quality. A new variable screening technique is proposed to identify variables that are decision relevant and preferably time invariant. A piecewise linear function is created for each continuous variable to approximate the relationship between the incremental effect and the variable, based on a binning technique. Finally, a score is created as the weighted sum of a set of functions, with each function being the empirical prediction of the incremental effect based on a variable, wherein weights are chosen to maximize the incremental effect area index. The methodology creates an improved incremental effect model, leading to more cost-effective strategies in business practice.
