    • A channel estimation system disclosed herein jointly estimates the channels for users transmitting signals allocated overlapping frequency resources in a received composite wideband signal. The channel estimation system may further limit the joint channel estimation process to only locally scheduled UEs and those desired users transmitting detectable desired signals using frequency resources at least partially overlapping the locally scheduled UE's frequency resources. More particularly, a local base station processes the received composite wideband signal to determine which of the potential desired user(s) have transmitted user signals allocated frequency resources that at least partially overlap the frequency resources allocated to locally scheduled users and having a sufficient signal strength and quality to be detectable as present in the received signal. The local base station processes the local and detected desired user signals in the received signal to jointly calculate channel estimates for the corresponding users based on the corresponding reference sequences.

In one embodiment, a primary direction of traffic flow for a user equipment located within a transition zone between a high power base station cell of the high power base station and a low power base station cell of the low power base station is determined to be either an uplink direction or a downlink direction. Cell selection for the user equipment is then controlled based on the primary direction of traffic flow for the user equipment such that selection of the high power base station cell is favored if the primary direction of traffic flow is the downlink direction and selection of the low power base station cell is favored if the primary direction of traffic flow is the uplink direction.

    • Embodiments herein provide reduced backhaul bandwidth requirements for Coordinated Multi-Point reception of an uplink signal. A cooperating base station receive and demodulates the uplink signal to produce soft output values that each indicate the value of a corresponding information symbol in the uplink signal and the level of certainty in that symbol value. The cooperating base station then selectively sends particular ones of the soft output values to a serving base station over a backhaul communication link based on whether or not the level of certainty indicated by each soft output value exceeds a certainty threshold. The serving base station likewise receives and demodulates the uplink signal to produce its own soft output values. The serving base station then combines respective ones of the soft output values it received from the cooperating base station and the soft output values it produced itself that are associated with the same information symbol.

    • The base stations in a coordinating set, i.e., CoMP set, implement distributed V-MIMO processing to decode uplink signals transmitted from multiple user terminals over the same time and frequency resources. Each base station uses the extrinsic information received from its coordinating base stations to facilitate demodulation and decoding. In the event that one of the base stations successfully decodes an uplink signal, it may provide the decoded data to the other coordinating base stations in the coordinating set. In this case, the coordinating base stations do not need to decode the uplink signal. Even if the uplink signal is not successfully decoded, the demodulated data received from the coordinating base station increases the likelihood of successfully decoding uplink signal in the next iteration of a HARQ process.

The scheduler (36) assigns a frequency from a partitioned portion of the frequency bandwidth if the cell served by the base station node is a micro cell and the wireless terminal is in an edge region of a micro cell.
