    • A multicolor printer for providing a printout of record data in desired colors by using the three primary colors of cyan, yellow and magenta either singly or by subtractive color mixing for developing a magnetic latent image and/or at least one type of electrostatic latent image formed on a recording drum having a conductive material layer, a magnetizable material layer and an insulating material layer superposed one over another in the indicated order. A multiple magnetic head forms on the magnetizable material layer a magnetic latent image of the record data corresponding to a first primary color, and a multiple stylus forms on the insulating material layer a positively charged electrostatic latent image and/or a negatively charged electrostatic latent image corresponding to a second primary color and/or a third primary color. The magnetic latent image and/or the electrostatic latent image or images are developed in the desired colors by a plurality of developing devices into a developed image of the record data which is printed on a sheet of support material by a transfer-printing roll and the multicolored image printed on the sheet of support material is fixed by fixing roll to provide a printout of the record data in multicolor.

    • A printing apparatus comprising: an elongate platen; a guide member extending parallel to the platen; a carriage slidably movable on the guide member; a printing head mounted on the carriage; an image reading device including an image-reading portion for reading images on a recording medium on the platen, the image-reading portion being movable between a reading position adjacent to the recording medium, and a retracted position spaced from the reading position in a direction away from the recording medium; and a device for engagement of the image reading device with the carriage, to permit the image reading device to move together with the carriage. The image reading device may be supported pivotally by the guide member in the form of a rod. The carriage may have a stopper abutable on the image reading device to determine the reading position of the image-reading portion. The apparatus may further comprise a member for checking optical sensitivity of the image reading device. This checking member has a reflector which is selectively placed in an operative position opposite to the image-reading portion, and an inoperative position misaligned with the image-reading position.

    • In a printer of the type having a print mechanism comprising a platen rotatable about its own axis for supporting a print sheet, an ink ribbon cassette accommodating an ink ribbon therein, and a print head movable along the platen for performing a print operation on the print sheet with the use of the ink ribbon, a hopper storing a stack of cut sheets is disposed above a first area of a printer frame and a stacker above a second area thereof. A pin tractor is disposed beneath the first area thereof for mounting a continuous sheet. The cut sheet and the continuous sheet are selectively fed to the print mechanism for printing. The stacker is movably disposed between a cut sheet receiving position allowing to receive the cut sheets discharged from the platen and a rest position rejecting to receive the cut sheet. A space above the second area is enlarged when the stacker is brought to the rest position, whereby the ink ribbon cassette disposed beneath the second area can easily be exchanged. When the continuous sheet is used, the stacker is brought to the rest position allowing to receive the continuous sheet from the platen. A sheet feed direction switching unit is detachably coupled to the stacker for selectively discharging the printed cut sheet onto a sub-stacker face up or onto the stacker face down.

    • A sheet feed device for feeding a sheet-like material includes a feed roller disposed upstream with respect to a sheet feeding direction for feeding the sheet-like material and main and auxiliary roller pair disposed downstream with respect thereto for further feeding the sheet-like material fed out by the feed roller. At the start of feeding the sheet-like material, both the feed roller and the main and auxiliary roller pair are rotated, and after the sheet-like material is fed a certain distance and grasped by the main and auxiliary roller pair, only the main and auxiliary roller pair is rotated, whereby a load imposed to a motor for rotating both the feed roller and main and auxiliary roller pair is lessened. According to another aspect of the invention, the sheet-like material is frictionally fed by the main and auxiliary roller pair, but in case where the peripheral speed of the auxiliary roller becomes slower than that of the main roller due to slippage caused by the sheet-like material interposed therebetween, the auxiliary roller is forcibly rotated at the peripheral speed substantially equal to that of the main roller, whereby the sheet-like material is prevented from being curved, jammed or wrinkled during the sheet feeding process.

    • A sheet feeder for a printer selectively feeds a continuous sheet and a cut sheet to a printing mechanism including a platen and a print head. The continuous sheet is fed by a pair of pin tractors and the platen while the cut sheet is fed only by the platen. At least one sheet presser roller is provided for guiding the feeding of the cut sheet, which moves toward the platen when the cut sheet is fed so as to hold the latter against the platen, and moves away from the platen when the continuous sheet is fed. A switching lever sets the sheet feed mode, which when moved to a first position causes to feed the cut sheet by rotating the platen and when moved to a second position causes to feed the continuous sheet by rotating both the pin tractors and the platen. In order to prevent the sheet from jamming or tearing off due to erroneous operation of the switching lever, a buzzer alerts the operator of the erroneous operation if the switching lever is eventually moved from the first to the second position or vice versa when a relevant sheet has been loaded in the printing mechanism. A paper bail is provided for retaining the sheet onto the platen, with which the cut sheet is retained with a stronger force so that the bottom portion of the cut sheet may be appropriately printed by the print head.
