    • A protective cartridge for a data storage disk (e.g. optical, magneto-optical and magnetic disks) has two disk-access apertures which enable the disk to be used with two different types of disk drives, i.e. those which extract the disk from the cartridge prior to a record/playback operation, and those which record/playback information on the disk while rotating the disk within the cartridge. One aperture is provided in a side wall of the cartridge and is sized to allow a disk to be inserted into or extracted from the cartridge interior, and the other aperture is provided in the top and/or bottom wall(s) of the cartridge to expose a sufficient portion of the disk to enable it to be rotated within the cartridge and to have data recorded or played back over its entire data-recording surface(s). Two different cartridge doors prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the cartridge interior through the disk-access apertures.

    • In an information-bearing disk having, along concentric record tracks, pre-written equally spaced tracking pads which may or may not be aligned radially from one track to another, circuitry serves for improving the response time of a disk drive mechanism during a track-jump operation, i.e. when a read/write transducer head moves radially from one record track to any other track. The circuitry includes a phase-locked loop (PLL), coupled to the transducer head and responsive to a pulsed signal corresponding to the frequency at which the tracking pads sweep past the head, and thereby the actual speed of the disk, for producing an adjustable clock signal which controls the rate at which user data is transferred to or from track segments between adjacent tracking pads. A flip flop, in response to a track-jump operation, resynchronizes the clock signal by resetting the phase of the PLL to match the phase of the tracking pads on the new track while the PLL temporarily latches the frequency of the clock signal until the track jump is completed. This improves the overall response time of a data transfer operation by maintaining an appropriate clock signal with minimal loop error in the presence of a difference in phase between the tracking pads on the previous track and the tracking pads on the track to which the transducer head has been moved.

    • An air bag assembly includes an air bag having a mouth portion having a plurality of alternating cushion tabs and cushion notches. The air bag assembly also includes a housing having a plurality of resilient clips thereon. An air bag retainer including at least one rod portion extends between at least two cushion tabs and extends across the cushion notches to define cushion openings. The cushion openings are adapted for receiving the clips therethrough such that the rod portion is snap-fittedly engaged beneath the clips to secure the air bag to the housing. Preferably, the clips each include a downwardly extending spring leg portion and a clip pocket shaped for closely receiving the rod portion therein such that the rod portion is snap-fittedly engaged with the clip pocket. Also preferably, the vehicle includes a vehicle panel and the vehicle panel pushes against the clips to trap the rod portion in the clips when the module is installed in the vehicle.

    • A focus/tracking actuator for an optical or magnetooptical disk drive includes a pair of moving-magnet type linear motors for simultaneously controlling the focus and tracking positions of an objective lens used to focus a write/read beam on a desired data track of a rotating data storage disk. Each motor includes a pair of selectively energizable focus and tracking coils, one coil being positioned within the other so that its respective windings are perpendicular to those of the other coil. Flux lines emanating from a permanent magnet secured to a movably mounted lens housing interact with the electromagnetic fields surrounding both coils, and a single steel plate or the like, positioned inside the windings of both coils, facilitates the return of magnetic flux to the magnet while preventing such flux from cutting portions of the coils which would act to exert an undesired forces on the lens housing. Preferably, the steel plate is composed of two segments to facilitate winding of the coils about the plate.

    • A single laser system utilizes a grating to provide a shifted beam and a nonshifted beam which are directed through a polarized beamsplitter in the nonsplitting direction. The beams are directed through a 1/4 wave plate by means of a folding mirror. The beams from the 1/4 wave plate are focused onto the recording surface to generate a write spot and a DRAW (direct read after write) spot. The DRAW spot is positioned behind the write spot at a distance of n+1/2 bits. Reflections from the DRAW spot are collimated back through the 1/4 wave plate onto the folding mirror. The folding mirror directs the collimated DRAW verify spot to the polarized beamsplitter where it is reflected through a lens to a DRAW spot photodetector for detection. In a like manner, read reflections are directed back to be focused on a read photodetector.
