    • A pollution control system and method in which sulfur oxides in flue gases are adsorbed by activated char in a gas-solid contacting device. The saturated char is regenerated in an integrated desorption-reduction vessel, to which crushed coal and combustion-supporting air are supplied. A portion of the crushed coal is burned to provide the heat for the regeneration of the char, resulting in the formation of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide gases, and the chemical consumption of a portion of the char. The remaining crushed coal reduces the sulfur dioxide to gaseous sulfur, and results in a material having a porous system suitable for use in the adsorption of sulfur oxides. The remaining regenerated char and the oxidized coal are cycled back to the gas-solid contacting device, and the gaseous sulfur is condensed to liquid in a condenser.

    • In an ultrasonic alarm installation ultrasonic waves are continuously emitted into a monitored region and a frequency shift due to a moving object, e.g. an intruder, by virtue of the Doppler effect is evaluated for giving an alarm signal. The function control in this installation occurs during a test phase by means of brief aperiodic modulation of the emitted ultrasonic waves. The resulting brief frequency broadening generates in the same evaluating circuit a signal if the installation is functioning correctly. The time duration of the aperiodic modulation is selected to be so short that no standing waves can form, so that the function control can also work faultlessly if the installation, because of vectorial addition of the received ultrasonic waves, accidentally is in an insensitive state. Thus even coverings of the ultrasonic transmitter during a sabotage attempt can be recognized and distinguished from an insensitive state.

    • Conventional airbag apparatuses have a very large volume for offering the greatest possible protection for the passenger, and therefore block the driver's view of the traffic situation and preclude further steering actions. Each stretcher has at its lower end an end member at which there is provided a sensing device by means of which the belt drives are shut off as soon as the closed end of the tubular material arrives in the region of the end member.     • A method for providing uniform thermal output from a glow plug for use in an auxiliary heater of a motor vehicle having either a 12 volt or 24 volt power supply without the use of multiplier resistors utilizes a glow plug having two heating rods having the same electrical resistance and three electrical terminals. One end of the first and second rods are permanently electrically connected respectively to the first and third terminals and the other end of the first and second rods are permanently electrically connected to the second terminal. The vehicle voltage is determined and if the 12 volt supply is present the first and second terminals are connected to the power supply and the first and third terminals are electrically connected to each other to place the heating rods in parallel. If a 24 volt supply is present, the first and third terminals are connected to the power supply with the second terminal left in connected thereby placing the heating rods in series.
