    • A flexible, reconfigurable processing system architecture allows for the implementation of a variety of processing system configurations to be implemented on a single device, which is preferably a PCI bus add-in extension board with an attached daughter card attached and electrically connected thereto through a PCI Mezzanine type connector, and which is plugged into a personal computer PCI expansion slot. The architecture uses the PCI bus, for example, as the local CPU bus for an embedded processor, which not only allows for flexibility in system configuration but also allows PCI devices to be hidden from the host CPU to allow for proper system startup. The architecture further permits an embedded processing CPU to be re-booted when the secondary PCI bus host bus bridge fails to respond without affecting host CPU or other secondary PCI bus peripheral devices. The architecture provides a method of loading an embedded system CPU's local memory with operating system and diagnostic code without the use of ROM or FLASH memory. A system and method of reserving memory is also disclosed which utilizes a dummy or surrogate board with little of no functionality but which has a class code of a common device such as an Ethernet card. The primary system BIOS will read the class code and reserve memory based on the surrogate card. The driver of the non-standard card such as an embedded processor, can then use the memory space allocated to the surrogate card by the BIOS.

    • A stretching bar that can be used for rehabilitation, medical treatment and fitness. The stretching machine is comprised of a stretching bar and, optionally, a base. The stretching bar allows the user to stretch while in a seated or standing position. The stretching bar is preferably constructed in a telescoping fashion with a plurality of nesting tubes which extend from one or both ends of the outer tube. The stretching bar further includes a means for attaching a handle mechanism to the bar. The attachment means is preferably a port which accepts and retains the handle. The handle may also be mounted such that it rotates or may be slidably mounted. The telescoping stretching bar preferably uses a series of telescoping tubes to achieve a satisfactory length when being used in the extended configuration, but which may be collapsed when not in use to enhance portability.

    • A camouflaged termite-monitoring device is provided. Such a device comprises a housing (100) which defines a cavity (300) and an opening (400). A perforated bait cartridge (475) is disposed within the cavity and contains a bait material (450) adapted to be attractive to termites. A mesh-like member (500) is operably engaged with the housing so as to cover the opening and to retain the bait cartridge in the cavity. The mesh-like member is further adapted to allow termites to pass therethrough into the cavity and the bait cartridge and to infiltrate the housing. An inspection hatch (550) is operably engaged with the housing and is configured to allow visual inspection of the bait cartridge within the cavity from outside the housing. Such a visual inspection is performed without removing the housing from engagement with the upper ground surface. An associated method is also provided.

    • A combustion apparatus such as a Diesel engine (16) in a motor vehicle (1) has an air inlet system (20,22) through which air can be drawn air from the atmosphere to the engine, a fuel supply system (28, 30, 32) for supplying fuel to the engine, and an exhaust system (34, 36, 38, 40, 42) for exhausting combustion gas from the engine to the atmosphere. A heat exchanger (48) is provided between the exhaust system and the fuel supply system so that heat is transferred from the exhaust gas to the fuel so as to warm the fuel and thus improve the combustion efficiency of the engine. When applied to a conventional layout of motor vehicle the heat exchanger can conveniently be disposed beneath the vehicle away from the engine compartment so as not to cause overcrowding thereof. The heat exchanger may form part of an EGR system (44,46) for feeding a proportion of the exhaust gas from the exhaust system to the air inlet system so as to cool the recirculating exhaust gas and thus enhance the reduction of NO and NO2 emissions.

    • In one embodiment, a storage device with biometric access includes: a biometric scanner adapted to scan a biological feature of a user to provide a corresponding extracted biometric template; and a storage engine adapted to retrieve an encrypted biometric template from a storage medium and to retrieve a corresponding encrypted content key from the storage medium. The storage engine generates a first key and combines the first key with a media identifier from the storage medium to provide a content key. Using the content key, the storage engine decrypts the retrieved encrypted biometric template. If the extracted biometric template matches the retrieved biometric template, the storage engine grants a user access to content on the storage medium.
