    • A steering force control apparatus for a power steering apparatus of a vehicle of the type having a reaction chamber responsive to fluid pressure applied thereto for producing a reaction force to counteract the steering force produced by a power cylinder. A main tubular spool is disposed in a valve case movably relative to the valve case and has an inner valve surface. A sub-spool is disposed in the main spool movably relative to the main spool and has an outer valve surface cooperative with the inner valve surface to define a variable throttle for selectively connecting a fluid pump to the reaction chamber and to the power cylinder according to the movement of the sub-spool relative to the main spool in response to the vehicle speed. The main spool is moved relative to the valve case and the sub-spool in response to the fluid pressure applied to the reaction chamber when the fluid pressure is above a certain value to enable the variable throttle to disconnect the fluid pump from the reaction chamber. A fixed throttle is formed in the sub-spool for connecting the reaction chamber to a fluid tank to release the fluid pressure in the reaction chamber.

    • A support member joined to a steering column to hold the column from below has planar opposite side portions formed in their rear ends closer to the steering handle with elongated grooves for passing bolts for anchoring the support member to the vehicle body. A frame-shaped energy absorbing member having a deformation promoting aperture punched therein to form zigzag substantial portions in parallel to the axis of the column is provided between the support member and the vehicle body. The absorbing member is partially formed with weak portions and is secured at its front end to the front portion of the support member and anchored to the vehicle body by the bolts. When the absorbing member is subjected to load less than a specified value and acting axially of the column upon the displacement of the support member toward the steering gear in the event of collision of the vehicle, the absorbing member undergoes plastic deformation, while if the load is greater, the absorbing member is breakable at the weak portions. The absorbing member has curved projections producing a saturated spring action on the support member and on the vehicle body against the axial fastening force of the bolts, permitting the friction between the support member and the absorbing member also to absorb the energy of collision.

    • An extendable shaft includes a first and a second shaft sections aligned on the same axis. External splines on an outer periphery of the first shaft section engage external splines on an inner periphery of the second shaft section.     • A power steering system is hydraulically operated to decrease the manual steering force in response to the steering wheel angular displacement. A main pump supplies a first hydraulic fluid to the power steering system to operate the same. The main pump is hydraulically coupled to the power steering system so that the pressure of the first hydraulic fluid is affected by the operation of the power steering system and therefore is indicative of the steering wheel angular displacement. A reaction chamber receives a second hydraulic fluid from a subpump and is hydraulically operated to increase the steering force in proportion to the pressure of the second hydraulic fluid. A first control valve is disposed between the subpump and reaction chamber for increasing the second hydraulic fluid pressure applied to the reaction chamber in response to the vehicle speed, and a second control valve is disposed between the subpump and reaction chamber for increasing the second hydraulic fluid pressure applied to the reaction chamber in response to the first hydraulic fluid pressure indicative of the steering wheel angular displacement.
