    • An LCD display system provides colored backlighting to enhance the viewing experience of presentations by the display system. The liquid crystal display (LCD) system includes a monochrome LCD to display monochrome information including at least two sectors; at least two backlighting elements to emit light in a plurality of colors, each backlighting element associated with one sector of the LCD and configured to backlight the one associated sector with a color light; and a processing device to control display of the information on the LCD and to select the color emitted by each backlighting from the plurality of colors. Each backlighting element may include two or more different color light emitting diodes (LEDs) wherein the intensity of each color LED is controlled by the processing device to provide the color selected by the processing device. A reflective element may be positioned relative to the backlighting element to reflect the color light emitted by the backlighting element. A diffusing element may be positioned between the backlighting element and the LCD.

    • A deformable toy is provided for generating sounds having variable acoustic characteristics. The toy includes a deformable body which changes shapes depending on external pressure applied to the body and a sound-reproducing device for playing back either prerecorded or newly recorded sounds, music, messages, etc., which have a predetermined playback rate as recorded to the device. The device is responsive to changes in shape of the body to vary the playback rate of the sounds by way of a mechanism of the sound reproducing device which varies the playback rate for the sounds being played back from the sound reproducing device to provide a highly interactive game for children which allows them to creatively alter sounds generated from the toy herein. In a preferred form, a pressure transmitting medium fills the toy deformable body and an actuator including a piezoelectric transducer and plunger engaging the body and the transducer responds to pressure transmitted through the medium by deforming of the body to shift the plunger, thus stressing the transducer to signal the toy circuitry for altering the sounds played back from the sound reproducing device of the toy.

    • A speech synthesizing circuit includes a speech synthesizing integrated circuit chip and an external memory integrated circuit chip. The external memory chip may be an audio data storage chip or an audio synthesizing chip. The chips are connected through an input-output port on each chip, and the microprocessor of the speech synthesizing chip retrieves speech data from the audio data storage memory of the audio synthesizing chip. Access to the memory of the audio synthesizing chip is accomplished by software simulations that modify the functions of instructions pre-programmed into the speech synthesizing chip during manufacture. The preprogrammed instructions cause the address of speech data to be loaded into a speech address register and the software modifications cause an address to be loaded into the audio synthesizing chip, by which the speech synthesizing chip will retrieve speech data from external memory at an address stored in the external memory chip. Alternatively, the instructions to deliver data to the speech synthesizing chip may be programmed into the audio synthesizing chip. A speaker is connected to balanced speaker driver outputs of the speech synthesizing chip and also to a single-ended speaker driver of the audio synthesizing chip.
