摘要： An optical cross connect architecture is provided in which the density of spectral bands on optical signals through the cross connect may vary. The general functionality of such variable-density optical cross connect is to receive input optical signals that each have multiple spectral bands and to transmit output optical signals each having one or more of the spectral bands. A concentrator redistributes the spectral bands from the input optical signals among a smaller number of first intermediate optical signals. A core cross connect redistributes the spectral bands on the first intermediate optical signals among second intermediate optical signals. An expander redistributes the spectral bands on the second intermediate optical signals among a greater number of output optical signals.

摘要： A tunable demultiplexer accepts an input optical signal that has multiple spectral bands and provides multiple output signals. Each of the output signals corresponds to a selected one of the spectral bands. The tunable demultiplexer has at least one wavelength routing element and at least one optical arrangement disposed to exchange light with the wavelength routing element. The wavelength routing element is of the type adapted for selectively routing wavelength components of a first optical signal onto multiple second optical signals according to a configurable state.

摘要： A wavelength router that selectively directs spectral bands between an input port and a set of output ports. The router includes a free-space optical train disposed between the input ports and said output ports, and a routing mechanism. The free-space optical train can include air-spaced elements or can be of generally monolithic construction. The optical train includes a dispersive element such as a diffraction grating, and is configured so that the light from the input port encounters the dispersive element twice before reaching any of the output ports. The routing mechanism includes one or more routing elements and cooperates with the other elements in the optical train to provide optical paths that couple desired subsets of the spectral bands to desired output ports. The routing elements are disposed to intercept the different spectral bands after they have been spatially separated by their first encounter with the dispersive element.

摘要： An optical interconnecting device and method are disclosed for selectively directing signals from an array of optical inputs to an array of optical outputs through an optical medium. The input signals are angularly multiplexed and redirected by dynamic gratings of the appropriate spatial, or grating, frequency. Spatially periodic optical index perturbations propragated in the medium are utilized to achieve the dynamic gratings. The angles at which light is input to the gratings (input angles) and angles at which light is collected from the gratings (output angles) are selected to allow each grating frequency to connect signals at only one input angle to one output angle and thus only one optical output. The number of resolvable gratings required is the product of the number of inputs and the number of output. For the interconnection of an equal number of inputs and outputs connected in a one to one permutation, only a number of gratings equal to the number of inputs need be present simultaneously.
