    • A controlled slew rate output buffer has an input stage that generates a charging current in response to the rising edge of an input signal and that generates a discharging current in response to the falling edge of the input signal so that both the charging current and the discharging current are substantially constant over a temperature range and a power supply voltage range. A charging stage responds to the charging current by charging an intermediate node at a first slew rate that is substantially constant over the temperature range and the power supply voltage range. A discharging stage responds to the discharging current by discharging the intermediate node at a second slew rate that is substantially constant over the temperature range and the power supply voltage range. A charging output stage responds to the charging of the intermediate node and charges an output node at a third slew rate that is substantially equivalent to the first slew rate and that is substantially constant over the temperature range, the power supply voltage range, and an output capacitance range. A discharging output stage responds to the discharging of the intermediate node and discharges the output node at a fourth slew rate that is substantially equivalent to the second slew rate and that is substantially constant over the temperature range, the power supply voltage range, and the output capacitance range.

    • This invention provides an improved surgical instrument, namely sponger-dissector forceps particularly adapted for laparoscopic intra-abdominal surgery such as gall bladder removal. Thus, sponges are retained locked in place without manual force upon the distal end of a substantially cylindrical hand held assembly by means of an internally mounted ratchet mechanism. In one embodiment sponges are retained by a 7 shaped distal end on a reciprocating 2 mm diameter rod disposed in a 10 mm diameter cylindrical housing member. The ratchet locks the reciprocating rod in place against movement in the distal direction, and thus holds sponges clamped in place at the distal end. The ratchet lock is releasable by a catch release button. The rod is manually reciprocated to engage and clamp a sponge by a finger operated slide member. The sponge is thus firmly held in position for blunt manipulation including direct hemostasis pressure on small blood vessels or for sponging to keep the surgical region dry. A clamping jaw embodiment provides for holding a sponge or alternatively for using the instrument for dissection or as a blood vessel clamp. Thus, tissue in an abdominal cavity may be grasped, displaced, or removed by manual manipulation from outside the body.

    • An apparatus for producing items in selected configurations and a system and method for controlling the same. More particularly, an apparatus for producing mail pieces and a system and method for controlling it to produce mail pieces in a variety of configurations are disclosed. The apparatus includes a laser printer and folding sealing apparatus controlled by a data processor. The folder sealer apparatus combines sheets printed by the laser printer with pre-printed sheets and envelope forms, which also may be printed by the laser printer or may be windowed envelopes, folds the sheets as necessary and folds and seals the envelope form about the folded sheets to produce a mail piece. A user inputs a configuration for the mail piece which is translated by the data processor into a data structure and transmitted to the controller of the folder sealer apparatus. The controller controls devices comprised in the laser printer and the folder sealer by executing state routines in accordance with the data structure to produce the mail piece in the defined configuration. Concurrently the data processor transmits text from an output file to the laser printer for printing on printed sheets and envelope forms. The data processor also controls the laser printer to print an address for the mail piece either on an envelope form or on a printed sheet in a position where it will be visible through the envelope. Thus the apparatus is controlled to process an output file stored in the data processor into a mail run having a selected configuration. A mechanism and method for opening the side flaps of an envelope form is also disclosed.

    • A collator system is disclosed, which allows a collator to operate in either one of two distinct modes: (a) RUN/REJECT; or (b) CYCLE/STOP. Each of the above modes of operation has a unique way of handling sheet feeding malfunctions. The RUN/REJECT mode allows the collator to continue to run, despite a sheet feeding malfunction. The stacks, or portions thereof, having an error are distinctly off-set from properly collated stacks. In the CYCLE/STOP mode, the collator feed is disengaged in accordance with the present invention and the drum is rotated at slow speed through a partial revolution and then brought to a stop. A pocket of the collating drum is thusly positioned in an operator accessible area, so that the malfunction may be easily corrected. The RUN/REJECT operational mode allows for automatic and continuous operation despite malfunctions, with corrections to improperly collated stacks to be processed after the completed collator run. The CYCLE/STOP operational mode allows the operator to easily correct any feeding malfunctions as they occur.
