When braking, a user only uses the heat conducting tubular hand rim. When pushing, the user grips across both the tubular hand rim and the contoured elastomeric interface, which deforms to fit the hand, thereby providing improved comfort, frictional coupling, and impact attenuation.

    • A hand rim assembly for a wheelchair wheel is disclosed, which includes an larger diameter hand rim and a smaller diameter hand rim. In one embodiment, the hand rim assembly is biasly coupled to the wheelchair wheel by a plurality of shock absorbing resilient fasteners. The shock absorbing resilient fasteners generally lessen the shock impact to the user's hands, arms, and shoulders, thus reducing the potential for repetitive stress injury and the like. In another embodiment, the smaller diameter hand rim has a different exterior coefficient of friction than that of the larger diameter rim so that users can use the hand rim with a higher coefficient of friction for propulsion and the rim with a lower coefficient of friction for braking. In addition, the rim used for braking, typically the smaller diameter rim, is formed of a thermally conductive material to reduce the potential for burning of the user's hands during braking.

    • A wheelchair-accessible treadmill with a safety system allowing wheelchair users to exercise without the risk off steering off-course, tipping over, or rolling backwards off the treadmill. The wheelchair is secured by straps or similar means to two or more linear bearings that move along the side of the treadmill on rods or in tracks. When securely fastened, these allow the wheelchair to move forward and backward on the treadmill belt. The treadmill belt may be wider than standard, the height may be lower than standard, and a ramp may be used for access. An optical sensor may be used to determine the forward and backward movement of the wheelchair user. Wheelchair specific programs may be available through the control panel.

    • An adjustable manual wheelchair handrim with a moveable elastomeric friction band. The position of the tubular handrim can be moved to a desired location relative to the wheel rim depending on the needs and limits of the user. The movable friction band is stretched around the drive surface of the handrim at a desired location preventing it from moving and providing increased frictional properties when gripped by the user during pushes. The friction band can be permanently affixed at a location to further prevent movement and slippage between the handrim and the friction band.
