    • A method for determining a proper preamble allocation mode is provided. The method is applicable to a base station communication with a number of human to human UEs and machine to machine UEs. The base station collects information from different types of UEs to figure out arrival rates for human to human type random access attempts and machine to machine type random access attempts. The base station selects one allocation mode out of two different allocation modes. In one mode, random access preambles are dedicatedly allocated to machine to machine type UES. In the other mode, preambles are commonly allocated to different types of UEs. The base station indicates the selected allocation mode by using system information block such as SIB2.

    • A method for transmitting data includes receiving at a first relay station first data from a parent station during a downlink period comprising a plurality of downlink zones. A network coding zone is one of the plurality of downlink zones and is located at an end of the downlink period, and the first data is received in at least one of the plurality of downlink zones other than the network coding zone. The method further includes receiving at the first relay station from a child station, second data during an uplink zone, and transmitting third data by the first relay station to the child station, during the network coding zone using a resource. The method further includes transmitting the third data to the parent station, during the network coding zone, using the resource. The third data results from the first data being effectively logically XOR-ed to the second data.

    • A method for relaying a signal in a wireless communication system is provided. The method comprises receiving in at least one of a base station and a relay station information regarding a mobile station group (MSG) of a mobile station, scheduling within a given duration uplink information to be transmitted from a first mobile station and downlink information to be transmitted to at least one mobile station, wherein the first mobile station is in each of the at least one mobile station's MSG, receiving in a relay station the uplink information and the downlink information to be transmitted within the given duration, network coding the uplink information and the downlink information in the relay station, and transmitting from the relay station a network-coded packet, wherein the network-coded packet can be received by the base station and the at least one mobile station.
