    • The printer and method are particularly advantageous for use in printing transportation coupons such as airline tickets and reservation confirmations. The printer is adapted to fit into the narrow space at an airline ticket terminal and to be usable in printing single-sheet tickets or confirmations, and for recording information on magnetic stripes on the ticket forms. Preferably, the printer uses an ion deposition print engine. Forms are stored in two stacks and fed from either stack through a magnetic recording/reproducing station to the print engine which issues printed forms through an opening in the front of the unit. The form feeding mechanism has easily-removable covers containing part of the feed mechanism so that the covers can be easily lifted to remove or reposition cards when necessary due to double-feeding or other feeding problems. A number of other notable features are provided. The resulting printer produces relatively high-resolution printing and yet is a fast, reliable, simple and cost-effective printer.

    • Means are provided for adjustably setting and determining the time duration of flow of a purge gas through process gas supply conduits which supply process gases to semiconductor manufacturing operations. These features are used advantageously to facilitate the changing of certain components of the system, such as a tank of toxic process gas, and/or a filter. A plurality of gas storage and distribution cabinets can be controlled from a single remote personal computer. Alternatively, each individual unit can be controlled by means of its own control system. Setpoints defining, for example, time intervals and pressures to be used in controlling the functions of the gas cabinets may be selected and entered through a front panel on the gas cabinet, or through the remote terminal. A print-out of the selected setpoints is provided by the terminal for improved record keeping of safety procedures used. The invention increases the safety of operation of the gas distribution system, and particularly the safety of the component changing procedures, and reduces the time and cost of such procedures, while improving the records kept regarding safety and other operations of the system.

    • The intermittent movement of the printer's carriage and "daisy"-type print wheel is controlled by a relatively simple, reliable digital control system. The difference between the desired velocity and the actual velocity of each member is measured digitally. This difference constitutes an error signal which is used to retrieve stored values of acceleration or deceleration corresponding to various values of the error signal. These values are used to develop a corresponding electrical signal which is used to accelerate or decelerate the member to reach the desired velocity. A relatively simple circuit is provided for reliably returning the carriage or print wheel to a desired position after overshooting the position, despite a relatively large amount of overshoot. Simple, low-power-consumption holding or drive circuits utilizing pulsed voltages are provided for the stepping motors used for ribbon feed and line feed, and for the solenoids used for ribbon shift, print wheel shift and print hammer energization. Digital control of the print hammer intensity is provided by controlling the duty cycle of the hammer energization signals in accordance with intensity values stored in memory.

    • The printer records images in the form of dots on electrical discharge-sensitive paper. Three groups of five styli are mounted on a rotor. The paper is in strip form and is fed continuously through a curved guide in a direction perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the rotor, so that the paper is wrapped part way around the rotor as it moves past. Characters are formed from a five dot by seven dot matrix. This invention provides means for automatically retracting the styli away from the paper when the rotational speed of the rotor drops below a pre-determined minimum level and, of course, when the rotor stops. This facilitates removal of the rotor from the printer, and also facilitates feeding a new strip of paper into the printer. Means also are provided for adjusting the axial position of each group of styli merely by turning one or more screws. The screws are easily accessible without removing the rotor. Simple screw adjustment means also are provided for adjusting the radial extent of the styli to compensate for wear of the styli, and align the characters produced by the printer. Means also are provided for easily removing and replacing the rotor in the printer, thus facilitating repairs or adjustments.

    • Apparatus for supporting and holding a circuit board in place in a machine for screen printing a major surface thereof with solder paste. The apparatus includes a member with a surface on which a circuit board rests as the board receives solder paste printing through a screen. The surface has a main groove and distribution grooves that intersect the main groove in communicating relationship therewith at spaced locations along its length. Further, the member has an air removal passageway extending therethrough from one side to the opposite side thereof. The passageway terminates on the one side of the member at an opening located in the main groove. A circuit board resting on the surface over the grooves is held in place during screen printing with solder paste as a result of reduced air pressure established in the grooves when air is withdrawn therefrom through the passageway.
