    • The present invention is directed to an antenna system that includes a broadband free-space antenna (i.e., an antenna that does not utilize a ground plane to create a resonant structure) and a high-impedance backing that allows the antenna to be positioned adjacent to a conductive surface that but for the high impedance backing would adversely affect the broadband operation of the antenna. The high-impedance backing substantially preserves the bandwidth of the antenna while also allowing the antenna to be positioned within λ/4 of the conductive surface and accommodate a predetermined amount of power.

    • The present invention is directed to a monopole/dipole symmetric radiator structure that includes a symmetric planar radiator. When the symmetric radiator is part of an operative monopole or dipole antenna, the antenna exhibits a wide or broad bandwidth, a VSWR of less than about 3:1, a relatively constant gain perpendicular or broad-side to the plane of the radiator, and is vertically polarized. In one embodiment, the symmetric planar radiator has an outer edge that is bilaterally symmetrical. In another embodiment, the outer edge of the symmetric planar radiator is bilaterally symmetric and a closed inner edge of the radiator that defines a void is also bilaterally symmetric.

    • The present invention is directed to an antenna system comprising two rigid portions, an electrical conductor located between the two rigid portions, and a connector that extends between the two rigid portions and: (a) allows the position of one of the rigid portions relative to the other rigid portion to be altered when a force is applied to one of the rigid portions, such as when one of the rigid portions encounters an obstacle, and (b) maintains the altered position until a subsequent force is applied. In one embodiment, the connector comprises a ball-and-socket joint with the spring force produced by the socket causing sufficient frictional force between the ball and socket so that the position relationship of the ball to the socket is maintained when only gravity is being applied to the rigid portions and the connector but allowing the positional relationship to be altered when an additional force is applied. In another embodiment, the connector is comprised of multiple ball-and-socket links that each provide a limited angular range of motion and cumulatively allow an angular range of motion that is the sum of the limited angular ranges of motion associated each of the links.

    • An ultra-broadband antenna system is disclosed. The antenna system is a single tubular antenna structure comprising an asymmetrical dipole fed with a biconical dipole. The biconical dipole covers the high frequency spectrum, while the asymmetrical dipole covers intermediate frequencies. The invention further relates to a combination of the two dipole structures such that together they act as a monopole to cover the low frequency spectrum. A first RF connector attaches to the asymmetrical dipole and the biconical dipole, and a second RF connector excites the combination of the two dipoles as one large monopole. A choke minimizes interference between the asymmetrical/biconical dipoles and the monopole. The resulting frequency span is greater than 500:1, providing operation over the range of 20 MHz to 10 GHz.
