    • A plurality of ducts disposed in a stationary blade ring diaphragm of a steam turbine, the ducts have inlets disposed upstream of the last downstream fin of a labyrinth seal formed between the diaphragm and a rotor. The ducts extend through a plurality of stationary blades disposed in the diaphragm, and have outlets on the downstream side of the diaphragm adjacent a casing, for reducing the total quantity of steam bypassing the stationary and rotating blades forming one stage of the turbine by directing steam, which passes through the labyrinth seal adjacent the rotor, to an area upstream of a labyrinth seal associated with a shroud ring encircling the rotatable blades of this stage of the turbine.

    • The headstock of a machine tool, and the saddle supporting the headstock, are independently connected to respective counter weights by flexible connectors such as ropes, chains, or the like. A column is interposed between the headstock and saddle assembly and the counter weights, and the assembly and the counter weights are movable along opposite surfaces of the column. An arm is supported at the top of the column and has a tubular pivot at one end and which has a vertical axis, and bearing means are provided between the top of the column and an intermediate portion of the arm. The arm carries two pulleys, one at each end, over which the connecting element for the headstock extends. A first joint connects one end of the connecting element to the counter weight and can perform correction movements in one direction, and a second joint connects the opposite end of the connecting element to the headstock and can perform correction movements in three dimensions.

    • A device for feeding strips of material such as labels includes a picker having gripping means such as a suction element which is movable to engage a label from a stack of labels in a magazine and to withdraw it from a magazine. The picker comprises a rotatable manifold which is rotatably supported on a crank arm. The rotational movement of the picker is guided by a planetary gear engaged within an internal gear in a manner to cause the suction member of the picker to move inwardly substantially normal to each label to grip the label and to move it away with the picker in a direction substantially normal to the label. The picker manifold advantageously includes two radially extending arm portions which communicate during their rotation with a pressure regulating plate for alternately connecting the suction member to a vacuum and to a positive or atmospheric pressure for engaging and releasing the label during its movement. The label which is engaged and removed from the magazine is either transferred to an intermediate take off roller or applied directly to a label support surface on a rotatable drum which moves the label into association with either adhesive applying means or heating means so that it will have a surface which may be subsequently directed onto a device such as a container which is to receive the label. The receiving roller advantageously moves through a path which intercepts a belt conveyor having suction means for withdrawing the label from the individual supports and then moving it onto a receiving article such as a container which is moved thereagainst. The label receiving drum may advantageously include supporting surfaces which are associated with pressure control means for applying a receiving suction for engagement of the label and a positive pressure for the disengagement of the label as necessary. In addition the supporting surfaces may be moved outwardly for engagement of the label during the transfer thereof from the picker. The support elements may also be for either effecting the direct withdrawal of the labels from a magazine or be oriented to receive the labels from a picker member.

    • Two support structures, each having a plurality of downwardly extending, substantially equally spaced pressing members connected thereto, each with a hydraulic jack interposed therebetween, are provided extending over the entire width of a stack of sheet materials to be cut on both sides of the torch of an associated gas cutting apparatus. During a cutting operation, the support structures and those pressing members which are located within a predetermined range around the torch are operated incident to movement of the torch under the control of a numerical control system, thereby to hold the individual sheet materials in tight pressure contact with each other at portions where they are to be cut, as the torch moves.
