    • A finish composition for fibrous material such as carbon, graphite or silica fibers comprises an aqueous emulsion of an elastomer and a lubricious substance which are both dispersed in the aqueous emulsion. The elastomer comprises a latex of butyl rubber or butadiene/nitrile type rubbers, and the lubricious substance comprises an emulsion of a hydrocarbon type wax such as paraffin. The aqueous emulsion which includes a dispersant such as water proportioned to provide the emulsion with a solids concentration of up to about 1% is applied as a size to the fibrous material, following which the water is driven off such as by use of elevated temperatures to cause the lubricious substance to separate from the elastomer and exude to the surface of the elastomeric sheath surrounding the fibrous material. The finish may be used as an aid to weaving, in which event it is applied to fibers such as carbon or graphite fibers prior to weaving and then removed after the weaving is completed. Also the finish may be applied and allowed to remain on fibers such as those of substantially silica composition to enhance abrasion resistance, anti-dusting qualities and other properties of already woven materials.

    • A high-strength, low weight, electromechanical cable is manufactured from aromatic polyamide multifilament yarns impregnated with a hydrolytically stable polyurethane resin to form a protective coating. The coating provides load adjustment from fiber to fiber, eliminates abrasive self-destruction of the fibers during flexing of the yarn under load, protects the fiber to some extent from ultraviolet radiation, aggressive chemicals or abrasive particles and makes it possible to preform the yarn. The coating comprises a reaction product of a liquid tetramethylene glycol, an aliphatic/cycloaliphatic diisocyanate and a diamine coupling-curing agent. The impregnated yarns are dried, twisted together, heated above the softening point of the resin to fuse the coatings of adjacent yarns, and then cooled to form a set twisted helix of the yarns.

    • A laminated article of hollow, circular shape includes an outer layer of relatively hard and strong carbonaceous material, an intermediate layer of highly deformable carbonaceous material disposed within the outer layer, and an inner layer of pyrolytic graphite deposited on the inner surface of the intermediate layer. The intermediate layer undergoes substantial compresssion with some permanent compaction thereof as the article cools following deposition of the pyrolytic graphite, due to the much greater shrinkage of the outer layer as compared with the layer of pyrolytic graphite. At the same time the intermediate layer has a desired amount of elasticity so as to exert nominal compressive stress on the layer of pyrolytic graphite. The intermediate layer may be comprised of porous carbon, and may have a surface thereof made very smooth in preparation for receipt of the pyrolytic graphite by infiltration, seal coating or other techniques.
