These tabs engage tab retainers on a flange of the food pan and allow the cover to rotate with respect to the food pan. A method is provided for attaching a cover to a food serving pan by sliding the tabs toward the tabs retainers and engaging them with the tab retainers, rotating the cover about the tab retainers along a first axis of rotation, translating the cover in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation, and again rotating the cover about the axis of rotation until the open end of the pan is covered.

In response to a breath sensor sensing a predetermined level of air movement, power to the electronic candles is turned off and secondary illuminating decorations, such as letters arranged in a birthday message, are turned on. In addition to the secondary decorations, music or other sounds may be issued from a speaker embedded in the food cover. The secondary decorations and/or music may be turned on for a predetermined time. Alternatively, the secondary decorations and/or music are on with the electronic candles and remain on, after the candles are "blown out", for a predetermined time.

A number of aesthetically pleasing features are also incorporated including arched windows around the perimeter of the sidewalls of the cover and outward steps around the lower part of the sidewall. The cover is constructed with a plurality of adjacently placed perforations around the periphery of the lower sidewall on the same horizontal plane. The lower section of the sidewall may be torn away at these perforations to lower the total height of the cover.

It includes a pair of upright side panels resting upon a substantially horizontal base such a table or the like, and a pair of mirror image front and back L-shaped panels.The side panels each has a pair of oppositely canted, stops molded in its side wall. Each stop is equi-spaced about a working plane normal to both side panels and the horizontal base.Each L-shaped panel includes an upright, wall segment that rests upon the horizontal base in the closed position of the food cover, and a roof segment that is canted in mirror image fashion about a plastic spider hinge coincident with the working plane. The canted roof segments are designed to be supported upon the canted stops of the side panels in both the full closed and half-open positions of the food cover.The spider hinge also includes a central spine segment coincident with the pivot axis and a plurality of arms and legs radiating from the spine segment, two of which attach to the lips of the L-shaped panel by means of a series of hand tightened wing nut-bolt combinations. Thus, the invention can be easily assembled and disassembled at an off-site location without tools.
