    • A valve means for a fuel dispensing nozzle located in the nozzle discharge spout at the outlet end thereof for sealing the outlet end to prevent the flow of fuel and fuel vapors out of the discharge spout when the nozzle vapor-seal valve is closed. The valve means is responsive to the operation of the vapor-seal valve so that when the vapor-seal valve is closed when the nozzle is not in use, the valve means is closed and so that when the vapor-seal valve is open when the discharge spout is operatively inserted into a fill pipe of a fuel tank, the valve means is open. To this purpose, means are provided to establish communication between the valve means and the flow passage upstream of the nozzle flow control valve and between the valve means and the flow passage in the discharge spout. In one embodiment, the valve means located in the discharge spout at the outlet end thereof is a pinch valve, and in another embodiment, the valve means is a wafer valve. In each embodiment, the valves are operable by the fuel pressure available in the nozzle.

    • A discharge spout tip for a fuel-dispensing nozzle wherein the outlet end of the tip has a cross-sectional area approximately equal to that of the discharge spout inwardly of the tip and wherein the tip has a downwardly sloping, upper surface for deflecting fuel flowing through the outlet end of the tip in a generally downward direction at an effective angle of deflection from the center line of the discharge spout so that the fuel flow is directed away from the upper surface of the fill pipe in order to prevent the formation of a liquid barrier in the fill pipe. By reducing or eliminating the liquid barrier in the fill pipe, the likelihood of occurrence of a spitback or spill is reduced. The fuel-deflecting surface of the tip may be formed by positioning a wedge-shaped projection on the upper surface of the tip, and alternately, the upper surface of the tip itself may slope downwardly from a point on said discharge spout to form a fuel-deflecting surface.

The shut-off device comprises a sensing orifice disposed at the end of a flexibly mounted tube within said vapor removal line, which tube leads to a passageway extending into the housing of said gasoline nozzle and terminating in a chamber that contains a conventional, diaphragm-operated, trigger mechanism for closing the main nozzle valve. In operation, no matter which way the nozzle is inserted into a gasoline tank fill pipe, the sensing orifice, by gravity, will fall into a position such that, if gasoline flows into said vapor removal line, it must also flood the sensing orifice. When gasoline enters the sensing orifice, the diaphragm-operated trigger mechanism, responding to a suction created by the flow of gasoline through a conventional venturi within the nozzle housing, releases the spring-to-close main nozzle valve.

    • A liquid dispensing nozzle is provided with a liquid discharge tube and a vapor recovery tube, both of which are adapted to be inserted into the fill pipe of a tank such as a motor vehicle gasoline tank. While gasoline or other volatile liquid is discharged through the discharge tube, a substantially equal volume of vapor is withdrawn through the vapor recovery tube to a pneumatic pump portion of a hydraulic motor-pneumatic pump device. Gasoline flowing through a hydraulic motor therein drives the pneumatic pump, which is operably connected to the hydraulic motor to be driven in synchrony therewith. The volume of vapor withdrawn from the fuel tank is adjusted to be approximately equal to the volume of liquid discharged, such that the pressure inside the tank is substantially atmospheric, and the end of the fill pipe of the tank may be sealed to prevent vapor from escaping or air from being drawn into the tank. The vapor recovery tube may be in communication with a vacuum chamber within the dispensing nozzle, such that blockage of the entrance end of the vapor recovery tube would result in a vacuum developed within the vacuum chamber sufficient to actuate a vacuum responsive device, which disables the manually operated lever of the dispensing nozzle.
