    • A video teleconferencing system uses digital transcoding to obtain algorithm transcoding, transmission rate matching, and spatial mixing. The video teleconferencing system comprises a multipoint control unit (MCU) for allowing multiple audiovisual terminals, which send and receive compressed digital data signals, to communicate with each other in a conference. The MCU has a video processing unit (VPU) that performs algorithm transcoding, rate matching, and spatial mixing among the terminals within a conference. The VPU includes a time division multiplex pixel bus and a plurality of processors. Each processor is assignable to an audiovisual terminal in the conference and is coupled to the pixel bus. In a receive mode, each processor receives and decodes compressed video signals from its assigned terminal and puts the decoded signal onto the pixel bus. In a transmit mode, each processor receives from the pixel bus uncompressed video signals from any terminal in the conference. The uncompressed video signals are processed and encoded for transmission to the respective assigned terminal. Video encoding time due to motion displacement search is reduced by passing displacement information from the compressed video signals to the encoder to be used directly or as a seed for further refinements of the motion displacement field.

    • A multi-point video conferencing system and method for managing display of images of multiple participating locations and bandwidth allocated for a multi-point video conference. The multi-point video conferencing system detects an audio signal associated with an image not currently displayed to each participating location in the multi-point video conference. When the number of active display windows is less than the maximum number of active display windows, a first active display window is activated and the image displayed in the first active display window.     • The invention concerns a system and method for enabling remote conferencing between conference participants. Employing the invention involves the use of one or more forms which support interaction with a computer system or network. Each form is printed on sheet material such as paper and includes coded data which allows it to be used to interact with the computer system via a sensing device operated by a user. Specifically, the method includes the steps of providing a participant with at least one conferencing form containing information relating to a remote conferencing session and including coded data indicative of an identity of the conferencing form and of at least one reference point of the conferencing form, receiving, in a computer system, indicating data from a sensing device operated by said conference participant involved in the conference session, said indicating data regarding the identity of the conferencing form and a position of the sensing device relative to the conferencing form, the sensing device, when placed in an operative position relative to the conferencing form, sensing the indicating data using at least some of the coded data, identifying in the computer system and from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the conferencing session, and providing at least one other conference participant remote from said conference participant with at least one conferencing form containing information representative of the at least one parameter. The invention can be employed by geographically distributed participants to communicate graphical ideas via a shared nullwhiteboardnull using interactive surface media while engaged in a telephone conference. Every time a participant adds a modification or a new diagram to the whiteboard, the other participants can be provided with a printed copy of the updated page.
