    • An apparatus and method for determining the position of a user terminal comprise an antenna subsystem which is able to receive signals of GPS and TV, a receiver front end which converts the frequency of the incident signals and filters out unwanted signals so that the desired signals can be sampled, a digital processing component which accommodates the imperfections of the front end and converts the measured signals into a position information. The apparatus is capable of receiving at the user terminal, broadcast television signals from television signal transmitters; determining a first set of pseudo-ranges between the user terminal and the television signal transmitters based on a known component of the broadcast television signals; receiving at the user terminal global positioning signals from a global positioning satellites; determining a second set of pseudo-ranges between the user terminal and the global positioning satellites based on the global positioning signals; and determining a position of the user terminal based on the first and second sets of pseudo-ranges, locations of the television signal transmitters, and locations of the global positioning satellites.

    • A cellular telephone having a global positioning system (GPS) receiver using a blended combination of GPS signals from GPS satellites and GPS pseudolites for determining a location. The cellular telephone includes a cellphone transceiver and a GPS receiver. The cellular transceiver receives wireless downlink cellphone signals from the cell site transceiver and transmits wireless uplink cellphone signals to the cell site transceiver. The cell site transceiver passes voice and data from the downlink and uplink cellphone signals within a local area into the worldwide network of telephone services. The GPS receiver receives satellite GPS signals from GPS satellites and pseudolite GPS signals from GPS pseudolites. The GPS pseudolites augment the GPS satellites for the local area by broadcasting pseudolite GPS signals having location-determination information with a format that is similar to the format in the satellite GPS signals. The GPS receiver uses either the satellite GPS signals, the pseudolite GPS signals, or a blended combination of the satellite and pseudolite GPS signals for determining its location. Then, the cellphone transceiver reports the location to the cell site transceiver in the uplink cellphone signal. The cell site transceiver transmits a downlink cellphone signal having acquisition aiding information optionally including GPS-based time; ephemeris orbital parameters for GPS satellites; and pseudorandom (PRN) codes, locations, and signal characteristics used by GPS pseudolites in the local vicinity. The GPS receiver in the cellular telephone uses the acquisition aiding information for speeding the time to the first location fix.

    • A positioning information transmitting device for transmitting the current site data to a peripheral device(s) using wireless signals. The current side data, as the positioning information of the current site, calculated by a portable telephone signal positioning processor 20 or a GPS unit 30, is transmitted to a CPU 12 through an interfacing (I/F) unit 11. The positioning information transmitting device 10 includes a local wireless communication unit 40 for transmitting/receiving data to or from the peripheral device(s).     • A method and apparatus wherein a software scheduling agent resides on a communication network and/or client device, such as location-aware wireless communication appliances, television set top boxes, or other end user client devices is disclosed. The software scheduling agent is part of a probabilistic modeling system in which the scheduler operates to perform constrained random variation with selection. Digital content is generated, organized, and stored on the communication network and/or the client devices. An electronic digital content wrapper, which holds information in the form of data and metadata related to the digital content is associated with each item of digital content. Contextual profiles for each user and each item of digital content are established by the users and the network and maintained by a service provider on the communication network. The software scheduling agent compares the contextual digital content profile for each item of digital content to the contextual user profile for each user to determine which digital content should be offered for presentation to each user. The comparison and determination of which items of digital content should be offered for presentation to which users is performed by a process of constrained random variation. After the software scheduling agent determines which items of digital content would most likely be relevant or interesting to the user, the digital content is transmitted, either in whole or in part, at predetermined times over the communication network to the appropriate client devices. The digital content is then stored, either in whole or in part, in cache memory on the client device until an appropriate time when the digital content is digitally packaged and presented to particular users over those user's client devices.
