    • An improved endocardial catheter includes a plurality of longitudinally extending openings adjacent intermediate portions at its distal end. The catheter is actuable from a retracted or collapsed mode, wherein the sealed openings are arranged around the tubular catheter surface, to an expanded mode. The plurality of longitudinal openings in the catheter wall enable radial expansion of the tubular surface at the distal end so that intermediate portions of the tubular catheter surface are moved to an operative position radially outward from their position in the retracted mode. In the expanded position, the intermediate portions form wings around the distal end, revealing a cavity within the tubular catheter for the release of contrast material or other fluid into endocardial sites through the longitudinal openings.

    • Catheters which utilize a flexible tube that has been modified at one end or both ends. Such modifications involve modifying a tube end to increase rigidity and strength (while maintaining some flexibility), or involve special placement of an intraluminal cord within the tube. One such catheter has a tube (20) with a cord (26) running therethrough wherein a portion of the tube's proximal end has been reinforced (30), preferably, in such a manner that the reinforced portion of the tube remains flexible. Similarly, another catheter includes a tube having an associated intraluminal cord, wherein the cord is affixed to the interior of the tube's proximal end. Another catheter has a tube and intraluminal cord with an enlarged end (e.g. a ball (28)) extending from the tube's distal end, and is modified by incorporating, within the tube's distal end, a spring (30). The thus placed spring (30) acts to increase the rigidity of the tip of the device, and interacts with the ball if need be to collect a portion of the tube which may break off from the remainder of the tube after placement.

    • A dual-lumen suction catheter is disclosed consisting of a longitudinally extending pliable tube having separate and independent suction and vent lumens. The proximal end of the catheter has a first open end for the suction lumen and a second, separate open end, for the vent lumen. The catheter is provided with an opening at its distal end through which fluids to be withdrawn from the organ of a patient enter the suction lumen. A plurality of spaced-apart apertures situated in the distal portion of the catheter extend from within the vent lumen through the wall of the pliable tube to the outside surface of the catheter, the apertures being longitudinally displaced from each other and from the distal tip of the catheter. The plurality of apertures are independent of and separate from the suction lumen.

    • An RF ablation catheter of the type comprising a flexible elongate catheter body having at least one lumen therethrough and having a proximal handle end and a distal end section adapted to be introduced into a heart chamber, at least one electrical conductor extending from the handle to the distal tip section within the at least one lumen for conduction RF energy, and a distal tip electrode coupled to the distal end section of the catheter body and electrically coupled with the at least one electrical conductor. The distal tip electrode is formed with a slip resistant, field focusing exterior contour for maintaining a position of the distal tip electrode bearing against the endocardium of the patient's heart, without penetrating the myocardium thereof, achieved through manipulation of the catheter distal tip section, and focusing ablation energy into the endocardium. The distal tip electrode is formed of a generally cylindrical, electrically conductive, electrode body having a hemispheric end and a tubular side wall at the distal end of the catheter body, and the exterior contour providing means further comprises a plurality of depressions formed by bores or annular or spiral or longitudinally elongated grooves formed in the hemispheric end and/or side wall. The exterior contour additionally assists in cooling the distal tip electrode.

    • A two-staged venous cannula is disclosed. The cannula includes an expandable reinforcing member around the atrial basket that prevents the cannula from kinking or collapsing in the area where the reinforcing member is applied. The reinforcing member preferably consists of an even number of rigid discrete beams of the same length equally spaced about the circumference of a cylinder. In an alternate embodiment, the beams may be equally spaced on the surface of a cone. Alternate spaces between the beams are formed. The alternate spaces between the beams are equally spaced around the circumference of the cannula. The alternate spaces between the beams remain equally spaced around the circumference of the cannula as the reinforcing member is expanded over a larger diameter. This design for the reinforcing member provides space between the beams where holes of the preferred shape, size and orientation can be placed through the cannula without requiring cutting through the material of the reinforcing member.

    • A kink-resistant steerable catheter assembly suitable for microwave ablation includes a handle, a catheter and a steering control. The control is disposed in and actuatable from the handle, for placing tension on one of a pair of steering wires while relaxing tension on the other of the pair of steering wires, thereby to bend the distal end of the coaxial cable extension toward the tensed one of the steering wires.
