    • The present invention includes a system and method of electronically executing transactions with a preprogrammed main computer having data and image storage and retrieval equipment. A plurality of electronic images of works of art which are for sale are created by at least one listing dealer and stored on the storage equipment associated with the main computer. Data is input about each stored image and input data is associated with each corresponding stored image. A plurality of preprogrammed intelligent terminals each having data storage and retrieval equipment, at least one display screen and at least one input device, located at at least one listing dealer location and at at least one buying dealer location communicate with the main computer. Search criteria are input through the intelligent terminals for selecting at least one of the stored electronic images for review. Selected images and corresponding data are communicated to the intelligent terminals and at least a portion of the selected electronic images are displayed. A reservation on at least one of the displayed electronic images can be made to prevent the completion of a sale transaction involving the artwork corresponding to the selected reserved electronic image. An indication of the reserve status of the work is displayed in conjunction with the display of the reserved work on any of the intelligent terminals. A buy order can be input on the intelligent terminals to transact a purchase of the artwork corresponding to the electronic image subject to the buy order. Instructions to complete the purchase are automatically generated and communicated to the intelligent terminals corresponding to the appropriate listing dealer and the appropriate buying dealer.

    • A clustered computer system includes multiple computer systems (or nodes) on a network that can become members of a group to work on a particular task. Each node includes group state data that represents the status of all members of the group. A group state data update mechanism in each node updates the group state data at acknowledge (ACK) rounds, so that all the group state data in all nodes are synchronized and identical if all members respond properly during the ACK round. Each node also includes a main thread and one or more work threads. The main thread receives messages from other computer systems in the group, and routes messages intended for the work thread to either a response queue or a work queue in the work thread, depending on the type of the message. If the message is a response to a currently-executing task, the message is placed in the response queue. Otherwise, the message is placed in the work queue for processing at a later time.

    • A tie ejector distributes new ties to be installed along a railway track, from a tie distribution car of a rail carried tie exchange vehicle. New ties are moved from a gondola cars to a conveyor at the rear of the tie distribution car leading to the tie ejector. The tie ejector has an endless drive chain on rotatable sprockets on a frame. Two striker plates are attached to the drive chain at opposite ends and opposite sides so that they cannot interfere. One is always on the rear when the other is on the front ejecting a tie by propelling it laterally relative to the conveyor. The trajectory of the tie is adjustable using a movable deflection shield attached to the frame, specifically to adjust the downward deflection angle. The tie ejector can be manually actuated by an operator while the tie distribution car is advanced, to drop ties next to the track at a predetermined and repeatable position relative to passing empty tie cribs.

    • A divisible shipping platform apparatus for supporting and transporting loads, in which the apparatus is easily divided into multiple independent shipping platform units for subsequent transporting and handling loads. The divisible shipping platform apparatus comprises a platform member separated from a bottom panel member by a series of pylons. The platform member and bottom panel member are constructed with one or more frangibility lines dividing the platform member and bottom panel member into divisible regions. Inasmuch as those frangibility lines and divisible regions are substantially aligned, independent shipping platform units may be separated from the divisible shipping platform apparatus upon exertion of a force on the divisible regions and, in turn, the frangibility lines. Pylon sleeves, substantially corresponding to the configuration of the platform member and bottom panel member divisible regions, may be associated with the pylons to facilitate division of the divisible shipping platform apparatus and to provide increased structural integrity for the independent shipping platform units. The divisible shipping platform may also be constructed with multiple, independent bottom panels corresponding to each platform member divisible region, or no bottom panel at all. Likewise, the divisible shipping platform may be constructed of a substantially unitary paperboard blank.
