    • A clamping device for frictional clamping of a workpiece which includes a clamp element adapted to frictionally clamp a workpiece and a mechanism for moving the clamp element which includes a shape memory alloy adapted to move the clamp element when the shape memory alloy is heated. The shape memory alloy moves the clamp element into a clamped state and/or unclamped state upon heating the shape memory alloy. The clamped element is preferably a super elastic alloy which is naturally oriented in a clamped position for a positive clamp and in an unclamped position for a non-positive clamp.

    • An actuation apparatus for positioning a workpiece includes a movable electrically conductive member connectable to said workpiece, first electromagnetic actuating means energizable by a first AC voltage source to produce a first force acting on said movable member in a first direction, and second electromagnetic actuating means energizable by a second AC voltage source to produce a second force acting on said movable member in a second direction opposite to said first direction. The forces produced on the movable member by the actuating means are brought about by the interaction of eddy currents induced in the movable member with the magnetic fields produced by the first and second actuating means. The movable member can be moved to a desired position by appropriate energization of the first and second actuating means such that the first and second forces are equal at the desired position.

    • This invention is an improved concept of the clamp shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,736,629, as issued June 5, 1973. This clamping device has two C-shaped arms, each of which is an assembly of two plate-like members of sheet metal. These two arm assemblies are pivotally retained at one end with the plate-like members in an overlay condition. A pivot pin has an enlarged center portion which acts as a spacer and has two eccentric cam areas sized and spaced to actuate apertures formed in one of the arm pairs. Shouldered rivets retain these arm assemblies in spaced array and a stop pin secured in this pivot pin has a length sufficient to engage a secured rivet. At one limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas move one arm assembly to a maximum clamping force and, at the other limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas are in a reduced-force application. Trunnion blocks are pivotally retained in each arm, with one block having through threads and the other block having a smooth bore adapted to rotatably retain a socket-headed cap screw whose threaded portion is compatibly disposed in the threaded trunnion. Rotation of this screw causes jaw ends having pivoted clamp pads to be brought to and away from each other. The members of this clamp are of metal and the pivot pin and clamp pads may be made by a screw machine and then heat-treated.

    • An engineers' or carpenters' vise comprising a tubular outer member (12) having a plurality of apertures (13) aligned along one side of the member. A jaw is fixed to one end of the member. A second tubular inner member (18) is telescoped within the first member and has a plurality of apertures (19) which cooperate with the aperatures (13) in the outer member. A movable vise jaw (20) is attached to the end of the inner member. A tapered lever (24) is provided for insertion into apertures which are not in line, so as to forcibly pry or move the inner member (18) in either one of two alternative directions. A tapered locking pin (22) is provided to securely lock the inner member (18) to the outer member (12) so as to prevent any return movement. The pin is inserted into apertures which are not in line. The inner member (18) can be removed from the outer member (12) and re-inserted into the opposite end of the outer member, so as to arrange the vise to have an even greater jaw opening.

    • A key vise structure is disclosed wherein first and second vises are mounted on opposite ends of the frame and a movable vise jaw in each vise is moved by an end of a beam spring. The central portion of the beam spring is moved toward the vise jaws by means of a mechanical advantage means, shown in the preferred embodiment as a manual handle and a toggle mechanism. This simultaneously clamps both vises closed upon keys for use in a key machine. The key vise structure is also provided with a shoulder gauge for the key with a spring acting to yieldably urge the shoulder gauge into each of a gauging and a retracted position and this shoulder gauge is retracted by linkage means as the vises are moved to the clamped position.
