    • An exemplary embodiment of an antenna in accordance with the present invention utilizes a sub-reflector and a main reflector with each of them having its own focal-ring type geometry. The antenna cooperates with a signal transmission feed disposed at the center of the antenna axis between the first and main reflectors to emit radio signals towards the sub-reflector. The sub-reflector reflects radio waves towards a main reflector which in turn reflects the radio waves to form the beam pattern emitted by the antenna. The reflecting surface of the sub-reflector is formed by a portion of an axially-displaced ellipse rotated about the antenna axis. The reflecting surface of the main reflector is defined by a section of a parabola rotated about the antenna axis to form a reflecting surface that concavely slopes away from the antenna axis. An embodiment of the antenna provides a wide coverage conical beam with selectable beam peaks that operate over a 2.25:1 frequency band range and provides substantially iso-flux beam density.

    • A single radiating structure with an integrated mode transducer that produces near-ideal radiation characteristics at two frequency bands. The dual band feed consists of three main sections: feed waveguide, mode transducer and corrugated horn. The feed waveguide consists of two concentric, circular waveguides that are excited in the TE.sub.11 coaxial and circular waveguide modes for the low and high bands, respectively. The mode transducer, which is critical to the performance of the feed, provides a single mode, low return loss transition, for both bands, between the feed waveguide and the corrugated horn. This is achieved by converting the TE.sub.11 circular waveguide modes into the fundamental hybrid, HE.sub.11, mode of the corrugated horn. The corrugated horn, which is a stepped-slot configuration, is designed to achieve a smooth transition from the mode transducer and to produce the desired radiation characteristics at both frequency bands.

    • A mobile satellite communication system includes an antenna assembly mountable on a vehicle and a satellite tracking assembly. The antenna assembly includes an antenna device for receiving first satellite signals from a first satellite in a first frequency band and for transmitting and receiving second satellite signals to and from a second satellite in a second frequency band, and a drive subassembly for rotating the antenna device relative to the vehicle in response to a control signal. The satellite tracking assembly maintains the antenna device pointed at the first and second satellites as the vehicle moves. The system further includes a receiver coupled to the antenna device for receiving the first satellite signals and a transceiver coupled to the antenna device for transmitting and receiving the second satellite signals. The first satellite signals may be video and imagery data signals transmitted in the Ku band by a direct broadcast satellite. The second satellite signals may be two-way digital communication signals transmitted and received in the L band by an AMSC satellite.

    • A portable radio apparatus includes an antenna, a transmission/reception circuit, a first matching circuit, a second matching circuit, and a first switch. The antenna consists of a linear element portion constituting a whip antenna and a helical coil portion constituting a helical antenna fixed to a distal end of the linear element portion through an insulating portion. The antenna is supported to be extendible from a housing. The transmission/reception circuit is connected to the helical coil portion in an antenna accommodation state and connected to the linear element portion in an antenna extension state. The first matching circuit performs impedance matching between the helical coil portion and the transmission/reception circuit. The second matching circuit performs impedance matching between the linear element portion and the transmission/reception circuit. The first switch connects the helical coil portion to the first matching circuit in the antenna accommodation state and connects the linear element portion to the second matching circuit in the antenna extension state.
