    • A gasket for pipe-to-pipe connections, which is closely received within a rectangular-shaped annular groove in the bell end of a pipe, and provides a compressive, fluid-tight seal with the spigot end of another pipe. The gasket includes a two-part body having a substantially rectangular profile in section, including a relatively rigid component joined to a relatively resilient component. The resilient component includes a radially inwardly projecting sealing lobe for providing a compressive seal with the spigot end of a pipe, and a reinforcement portion of the rigid component is disposed between the sealing lobe and the pipe bell end to provide a radially non-compressible reaction surface against which the sealing lobe is compressed. The rigid component also includes a tapered leading edge portion for aligning and centering the spigot end of a pipe upon insertion within the gasket, and the leading edge portion is reinforced by a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs.

    • A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron fitting is shown for both sealing and preventing separation of an iron pipe fitting and a mating male pipe. The restraint system includes both a sealing ring and a combination gripping ring which are installed in a groove provided in a mouth region of the iron fitting. The gripping ring has teeth on an inner surface which are initially angled away from an outer surface of the male pipe. The teeth are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the mating male pipe as the pipe joint at the fitting is assembled. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the fitting joint has been assembled. The sealing ring and gripping ring are installed in the annular groove of the as-cast iron fitting after the iron casting operation at the factory.

    • A sealing and restraining gasket for preventing separation of a pipe joint used to join a bell end of a female pipe to the male end of a mating pipe. The gasket is formed from a compressible body of elastomeric material and carries a rigid ring with gripping teeth for engaging an outer surface of the mating male pipe. The ring has a gap at one location. The gripping teeth of the rigid ring are oriented so as to be out of contact with and initially angled away from the outer surface of the male plastic pipe. The teeth are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the male pipe as the pipe joint is assembled and the gap in the ring is partly closed. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to the female bell end opening during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the pipe joint has been assembled.

    • A connection for and a method of connecting the ends of two joints of low modulus, low hardness, low strength plastic pipe. The connection includes a threaded box on one joint and a threaded pin on the other joint. The box has tapered, internal, generally dovetail-shaped threads with stab flanks and load flanks and flat roots and crests that are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. The pin has tapered, external, generally dovetail-shaped threads with stab flanks and load flanks and flat roots and crests that are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe for mating with the internal threads of the box. The threads increase in width in one direction on the box and in the other direction on the pin. When the connection is made up the roots, crests, and flanks of the threads move into engagement to form seals that resist the flow of fluids between the threads. The roots, crests, and flanks remain in engagement even after the compressive stresses created in the pin and/or the tensile stresses created in the box when the connection is made up is relieved by cold flow and continue to seal against internal pressure by the locking effect of the dovetailed-shaped threads.

    • A sealing connection for the passage of a fluid control line through adjoining members. The connection comprises a metallic tubular sealing element (10) provided with tapered end portions, each end having internal frusto-conical surfaces (32, 33) and external frusto-conical surfaces (41,43) in coaxial alignment with the bore (31) through the element (10). The external frusto-conical surfaces (41, 43) provide metal-to-metal sealing with aligned frusto-conical seating surfaces (62, 54) in opposed pockets (51, 61) formed in aligned portions (28a, 29) of the control line at their respective openings at the adjoining surfaces of the adjoined member (13, 12). The tubular sealing element (10) is subjected to axial compression between the frusto-conical pocket seating surfaces (62, 54) when the adjoined members (13, 12) are bolted tightly together which results in deformation of its tapered end portions to provide metal-to-metal sealing with the adjoined members (13, 12) which is effective to seal against both internal and external fluid pressurization of the control line and without internally obstructing or restricting the control line. Secondary sealing is provided by elastomeric O-ring seals (36, 39) mounted in circumferential annular grooves formed in the exterior of the tubular sealing element (10).
