    • There is provided a high-intensity discharge lamp lighting apparatus to be loaded with a plurality of types of high-intensity discharge lamps and connected with any one of the lamps to be lighted, and the apparatus comprises a power conversion circuit for converting power supplied from a DC power source to supply the power to a high-intensity discharge lamp and a lighting control circuit for controlling the supply power of the power conversion circuit, wherein the type of the connected high-pressure discharge lamp is determined based upon a change rate of an electric characteristic of the high-intensity discharge lamp during a specific period, and the connected high-intensity discharge lamp is lighted with a desired electric characteristic selected based upon the determination result, thereby enabling discrimination of types of rated power of the plurality of types of lamps by the same detection method and the same control method irrespective of states in starting of the lamps, and by enabling the discrimination before stable lighting of the lamp, it is possible to start the discharge lamp with little stress applied to the discharge lamp.

    • An electronic ballast for driving a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp is provided. The electronic ballast includes a voltage boost stage for receiving a DC input voltage and outputting a boosted DC output voltage with a controlled current. It further includes a switching stage for converting the boosted DC output voltage to a switched AC voltage capable of driving the HID lamp. An integrated circuit (IC) is coupled to the voltage boost stage and the switching stage for controlling both. The IC includes a lamp power control circuit comprising a sensing circuit for sensing an output current from the switching stage and the boosted DC output voltage, a current control loop which controls the lamp power if the lamp current is at a maximum level and a power control loop which controls the lamp power if the lamp current is below a maximum level. The IC also includes a controller unit interface and provides an ignition mode and a regular operation mode.

A driver circuit provides a pulse at a trailing edge of the lamp current or the lamp voltage to be supplied when the discharge lamp emits the light, and also determine amplitude of the pulse, in accordance with fluctuation on the lamp voltage (VL) with respect to lighting time of the discharge lamp, which is measured in advance.

    • An apparatus supplies power to at least one discharge lamp. The apparatus includes a buck converter for regulating power supplied to at least one discharge lamp having a switching element driven by PWM pulses, and a control unit for supplying PWM pulses to the buck converter. The control unit includes a function for controlling an output power of the buck converter so as to be constant using PWM pulses of a first frequency; and a function for controlling an output voltage of the buck converter so as to be maximum using PWM pulses of a second frequency that is lower than the first frequency. The buck converter is capable of operating in discontinuous mode based on the PWM pulses of the second frequency.

    • An operating device control section (4) controls an output current of a DC-DC converter (1), and also controls a commutation frequency of a commutator (2) that converts a direct current output from the DC-DC converter into an alternating current. The operating device control section operates a discharge lamp, at the start of lamp operation, with a predetermined voltage value lower than a rated voltage and a first target current value higher than a rated current, then, at an end of a predetermined high frequency start period (T1) elapsed from the start of lamp operation, controls the commutator to switch from a commutation frequency higher than that during a steady lamp operation to a commutation frequency during the steady lamp operation, and then, after a voltage applied to the discharge lamp increases and reaches a voltage not lower than a predetermined threshold voltage (Vth) which is not higher than the rated voltage, controls the DC-DC converter to switch from the first target current value to a second target current value which is not higher than the rated current to operate the discharge lamp. A temperature of a lamp electrode can be increased quickly and sufficiently to reduce a time required to increase the lamp illuminance, thereby reducing a time required to cause video to be viewable.
