The ignition timing system includes electronic signal pick-ups associated with each conductor running from one set of points to its respective spark plug, a light source for illuminating a timing mark when a spark plug is fired and a three position switch connecting the pick-ups with the light source such that the light source is flashed upon the firing of either or both of the spark plugs.

    • Apparatus for the immediate identification of mechanical and electrical faults particularly for explosion engines comprising a plurality of connectors connected to a compressed air distribution duct and provided each with a respective flexible duct. The latter terminates with an externally threaded connector with the same pitch as the thread of the sparking plugs of an explosion engine. A pressure gauge is connected to at least one of the connectors and a first non-return valve provided between the connector and the pressure gauge. A second non-return valve is arranged between the distribution duct and a point of the connector upstream of said first non-return valve. The apparatus also comprises connecting means between the distribution duct and the compressed air receiver and a shut-off valve in such connecting means.

    • The disclosure describes apparatus for disabling selected cylinders of an internal combustion engine for diagnostic purposes. The system and apparatus are preferably used in connection with an engine that includes a source of periodic cycles of ignition signals. When used with such an engine, the apparatus prevents one or more predetermined ignition signals in each cycle from energizing engine components, such as spark plugs, which normally receive the ignition signals. In order to achieve this purpose, the preferred apparatus embodiment described in the disclosure comprises a clock pulse generator that generates a uniform pulse in response to the receipt of each ignition signal from the engine. Counting means, such as bistable flip-flop circuits, are used to produce counting states representative of the number of pulses received from the clock pulse generator. Adjustable resetting means are used to reset the counting means to a predetermined counting state after the counting means has counted through a predetermined number of counting states, such as the number of cylinders in the engine being diagnosed. Removable setting means are employed to set the counting means to an initial counting state in response to the receipt of an ignition signal from a predetermined engine component, such as a spark plug. Adjustable selecting means generate a disabling pulse in response to a predetermined counting state of the counter, so that a particular cylinder of the engine may be disabled. A disabling device, such as a triac, responsive to the disabling pulse, conditions a predetermined ignition signal in each engine cycle so that the corresponding engine cylinder is disabled, thereby aiding the diagnosis of the engine.

    • Circuitry responsive to a TDC signal, produced when the reference cylinder of the engine is at the top dead center position, and an ignition signal, produced when an ignition spark potential is generated for the reference cylinder, produces a series of timing angle signal pulses of a width proportional to the period between the TDC and ignition signals. An averaging circuit produces a timing angle potential signal of a magnitude proportional to the width of the timing angle signal pulses and of a polarity which indicates whether the ignition spark is retarded or advanced. The timing angle potential signal is applied to a digital voltmeter which indicates directly in degrees the ignition spark retard or advance and is compared with timing angle high and low reference potentials, of respective magnitudes above and below the magnitude of the timing angle potential signal at the selected number of degrees of ignition spark advance or retard, in respective comparator circuits which produce respective output signals indicating whether the ignition spark is retarded or advanced from or occurs at a selected timing angle.

    • Apparatus for determining the spark advance of an internal combustion engine by the use of a stroboscopic lamp in which a sawtooth voltage is initiated with the occurrence of a regularly repeating electrical impulse such as the firing of a particular spark plug and in which the stroboscopic lamp is energized during each cycle of the sawtooth voltage when the instantaneous amplitude of the sawtooth voltage reaches a predetermined value, the selected value of the instantaneous amplitude being determined by an adjustable means which selects a portion of the sawtooth voltage and applies it to a voltage comparison circuit which in turn controls the conductivity of the lamp. The adjusting means is calibrated in degrees of the cycle of the operation of the engine. The amplitude of the sawtooth voltage is determined by a capacitor charging circuit and the timing rate of the capacitor charging circuit is adjusted in accordance with its maximum amplitude to maintain the same constant.
