    • A laser driver circuit driving a laser diode to generate an optical output corresponding to an input data, and controlling the optical output based on an output current from a photodiode that detects the optical output. The output current is converted into a voltage signal, whose amplitude is detected after filtering the voltage signal by a low-pass filter. A reference signal corresponding to the input data is generated, and its amplitude is detected. A modulator for generating a modulation current regulates the amplitude of the modulation current according to the difference between the two detected amplitudes.

    • A method for making a laser driver circuit for burst mode is described. A continuous mode laser driver circuit can be used in burst mode transmission system by using the method. The method is described as follows. First, a continuous mode laser driver chip is selected, the chip has a temperature compensation output and a pulse width adjustment input. Next, the temperature compensation signal from the temperature compensation output is converted to a pulse width adjustment signal using an eye diagram adjustment circuit, and the pulse width adjustment signal is sent to the pulse width adjustment input. The pulse width adjustment signal automatically adjusts the cross points of the eye diagram of the laser according to the environmental temperature, so that the cross points are sustained at a predetermined level to reduce the Bit Error Rate.

    • A pulse controlled phase modulator device converts an unknown phase pulsed input signal to a continuous wave phase modulated output signal. The pulsed input signal activates a switch, such as a saturable absorber operating near saturation, to pulse modulate a dependent signal that has a known phase value. A combiner combines the dependent signal with an independent signal to produce the constant magnitude continuous wave phase modulated output signal. The output signal is a binary phase shift keying signal with the same frequency as the continuous wave input signal. An amplifier or weighted splitter is used to make the dependent signal larger in magnitude than the independent signal and a phase inverter is used to make the dependent and independent signals opposite in phase.The pulse controlled phase modulator consists of a splitter, an independent stage, a dependent stage, and a combiner. A threshold device is also used on the pulsed dependent signal to inhibit output magnitude variations.

    • The present invention discusses a modulation method and apparatus for modulating an extended-cavity laser (211). The method and apparatus (200-203) entails the use of each pulse in an input modulating pulse train as the trigger for the generation of a brief or “notch” pulse, i.e. a pulse that briefly diminishes the normal drive current. Each “notch” pulse is used to drive the semiconduct (211) embedded in an extended cavity with a current that flows opposite to its normal drive current. This serves to diminish the inverted charge-carrier population essential to lasing action, so the laser output falls sharply in a form of amplitude modulation. The invention also discloses a simple, miniaturized means (372, 352, 312) of micropositioning, based on the differential rotation of nested conical plugs, that can serve to couple the semiconductor laser to the cavity.
