    • The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the hardening of elongate workpieces by means of an inductor 19. The apparatus comprises a rotary ring 3 mounted to rotate around a horizontal axis in a hardening basin 1 and having a number of retaining devices 11 by means of which each of individual workpieces 16 is retained horizontally and rotatably around its longitudinal axis. To improve the hardening result and increase the degree of automation of the apparatus and process, associated with each retaining device 11 for connection to a central driving shaft 2 is an adjustable clutch-brake unit 7, and the retaining device 11 is drivable by the driving shaft 2 in a first position, is uncoupled from the driving shaft 2 and freely rotatable in a second position and is braked in relation to the rotary ring 3 in a third position.     • Salt bath techniques are used to heat treat and quench a metal component. The component is first heated to the required heat treatment temperature while disposed within a sealed, first salt bath. Then, while still within the first salt bath, the component is quenched into a second salt bath. Heat is rapidly and uniformly transferred from the hot, first salt bath to the cool, second salt bath, and from the component to the first salt bath. The uniform rate of heat transfer minimizes any undesired stresses on the component, and permits components having complex geometries to be heat treated and quenched without distortion or cracking.

Cooling is effected while restraining the radial displacement of a pipe at a point not more than 500 mm, or preferably not more than 250 mm, away from each end of the pipe and at intermediate points spaced at intervals of 1.0 m to 2.5 m.     • Heat treating salt used as a bath in heat treating metal articles is reclaimed from the rinsing tank in a closed cycle by removing a portion of the salt-contaminated rinse water from the rinsing tank to an enclosed portion of the heat treating tank which serves as a water evaporation zone. There the salt-contaminated rinse water is evaporated by direct contact with the hot molten salt bath and the resulting steam, either as such or after condensation, is conducted back to the rinse tank where it serves to replenish the rinse water. The salt content of the contaminated rinse water which is left behind in the water evaporation zone becomes commingled there with the molten salt bath and is thus reclaimed.
