    • The present invention generally relates to a process of and apparatus for manufacturing tile mosaics from at least two stone slabs, such as marble or granite slabs. The process comprises the steps of: a) cutting each of the two slabs into a matrix of pieces while maintaining the original orientation of the pieces, b) classifying the pieces of each matrix into two or more sets of pieces, c) intermixing a first set of pieces of one slab with a second set of pieces of another slab while maintaining the original orientation of the pieces, thereby forming the mosaic. The cutting apparatus comprises: a) a platen having a resilient layer for supporting the slab, b) a gantry table saw having a plurality of blades and a rotatable table for supporting the platen, and c) a hold-down rack for securing the slab and platen during cutting. At least two grippers are use to intermix at least one set of pieces from one slab with at least one set of pieces from a second slab to form the mosaic. By mixing the color shades and grain patterns of several different stone slabs, a mosaic having a handset look is achieved. Adjacent rows of the newly formed mosaic matrix may be offset to further enhance the handcrafted appearance of the mosaic.

    • A pipe severing device (1) and method utilizing a chain (13) having stress inducing wheels (19) efficiently and safely severs brittle materials including cast iron, vitreous clay, cement and asbestos pipe. The device includes an actuating handle (6) which pivots over a pipe support surface (3). Upon pivoting over the surface, holddown arms (7) attached to the actuating handle frictionally grasp a pipe. The handle may then pivot about a second point or remain rigid, in either case engaging a first limit switch (25) which actuates a hydraulic cylinder (35). The hydraulic cylinder tightens the chain causing the stress inducing wheels to create stress concentration points around the circumference of the pipe. Cracks propagate between stress concentration points, quickly severing the pipe. The pipe support surface includes resilient pads (5a,b) which further frictionally grasp the pipe.

    • A ceramic tile cutting apparatus utilizes a motor driven blower device to collect ceramic dust into a container providing vertical support to the cutting apparatus. A drawer is employed to collect the dust and may be slideably disengaged passing through a drawer accommodating opening in in the container. The motor and blower assembly is secured to the container covering an opening therein. A filter is removably disposed intermediate a housing containing the motor and blower assembly and the opening in the container. The container is spaced above a resting surface by resilient rubber-like feet preventing vibration and noise. An opening in the container communicates to a portion of a circular cross-sectioned blade, having a silicon carbide covering, passing dust particles to within the container maintained at a pressure level lower than atmospheric, by the rotation of the blower assembly.
