    • An attachment for an offset press, of the type adapted to process individual sheets of paper, to enable it to feed and print continuous form in proper registery. In one embodiment the invention includes a paper feeding station downstream of the press and a separate registration station upstream of the press. The paper feeding station employs an adjustable rotating circumferential segment, driven off the press, cooperating with a draw roller to intermittently engage the continuous form paper, draw a predetermined increment through the press and then disengage from the paper. In another embodiment the paper feeding function is accomplished by the printing blanket which discontinuously engages the paper and feeds it through the press in predetermined increments thereafter disengaging from the paper after each of the increments is fed. In both embodiments the registration station maintains continuous engagement with the paper by means of a freely rotatable, endless pin belt which engages the pin holes of the paper and individually registers each increment of paper to the press while the paper is disengaged by the paper feeder. A rotating disc, operatively connected to the pin belt, includes a plurality of windows for receiving a solenoid activated, wedge-shaped finger which arrests and positions the disc and paper in one of a plurality of predetermined positions. A sensor associated with the paper feeder detects when the paper is engaged or disengaged and generates a signal to the solenoid.

    • A control system and method for acquiring and automatically maintaining a register condition for successive repeat lengths of a moving web relative to a cut-off apparatus or the like in a web operating apparatus of the type which includes an adjusting means for adjusting the web. The system operates in manual and automatic mode, and while in the manual mode an image profile of the web is digitized, stored and processed to locate at least one suitable control mark. After the register condition is obtained and at least one control mark indentified during the manual mode, the system can be switched to automatic mode to automatically maintain the registration condition using at least one control mark to detect deviation from the register of the web.

    • A synchronizing system for synchronizing the speeds of two webs of goods, wherein the first web runs at a constant speed and the second web has an adjustable running speed. First pulses are generated which have a frequency dependent upon the speed of the second web and a first counter is associated with the second web and is triggered by the first pulses. The first counter is also controlled to be started and stopped by at least one pair of timing marks which are running with the second web of goods. As a result of the frequency of the first pulses and the starting and stopping of the first counter, the first counter reaches a constant count upon stopping and each time the first counter is started for the next count this constant count is reached. Second pulses having a constant frequency associated with the speed of the first web are used to trigger a second counter which is started and stopped by the first counter when the constant count is reached. The count that is finally obtained in the second counter is indicative of the amount of over synchronization or under synchronization of the speed of the second web relative to the first web.

    • A drive for tension rolls incorporating differential gear systems for all rolls but one in any one bridle, and means for automatically regulating and adjusting the speed and/or torque of each of the differentially driven rolls with reference to a direct coupled roll in the group or bridle which is itself driven at a predetermined reference speed corresponding to the speed of the sheet metal itself. Such a sensor may take the form of a straight forward tachometer, or may be in the form of a torque strain sensor. In this way, the speed of rotation and/or torque of each of the rolls in each of the bridles is controlled and synchronized with the speed of the sheet metal as it moves in unison with that particular roll, thereby minimizing and substantially eliminating any possibility of slippage between the roll and the sheet metal.

    • Control apparatus for the registration of a printing press or the like incorporates means for generating a pulse of predetermined length, referred to as a window pulse, and a short reference pulse which is centered within the window pulse. The window pulse is generated by a flip-flop which is triggered at a predetermined time during each revolution of a printing cylinder, and an integrator, operative in response to triggering of the flip-flop, integrates an input signal proportional to the speed of the press until a predetermined level is reached, at which time the flip-flop is reset. A reference pulse is derived from a second integrator which integrates an input signal which is twice the rate of that of the first integrator so that the reference pulse always falls in the center of the window pulse.
