    • The main subject of the present invention is a process for processing a paste (5) containing a solid charge (C) with a view to extracting at least one part of said solid charge (C). Said process comprises continuously: mixing, in a mixer (8), said paste (5) with a liquid solvent (3), a solvent for said at least one part of said solid charge (C), with a view to dissolving, at least partially, said at least one part of said solid charge (C) in said solvent (3); recovering, after said mixing, a biphasic system (15) comprising, on the one hand, a solution (3′) enclosing at least one fraction of said at least one part of said solid charge (C), dissolved in said solvent (3), and on the other hand, a solid residue (5′) of said paste (5); and then, separating said solution (3′) and said solid residue (5′) of said paste (5).

    • Methods for extracting solute from plant biomass, some examples comprising placing plant biomass in extraction chambers, introducing extraction solvent into the extraction chambers to produce first mixtures, sealing the extraction chambers at predetermined initial pressures, performing pressure adjustment procedures on the first mixtures, the pressure adjustment procedure including introducing pressure gas into the extraction chambers and removing at least a portion of the pressure gas from the extraction chambers, repeating the pressure adjustment procedure, and discarding plant biomass to produce third mixtures. Some examples include introducing transfer oils and removing extraction solvents to produce essential oil mixtures containing transfer oils and extracted solutes. In some examples, an extraction chamber containing plant biomass and a quantity of extraction solvent is provided. In some examples, the pressure adjustment procedure is repeated a predetermined number of times; in others, the pressure adjustment procedure is repeated for a predetermined duration.

    • A method for obtaining a liquid from a porous solid phase is described. The method comprises forming a liquid seal at a first end of a porous solid phase to which a liquid is bound, wherein liquid of the liquid seal is immiscible with the liquid bound to the solid phase, and applying a pressure differential across the porous solid phase to cause the immiscible liquid to move through the porous solid phase towards a second end of the porous solid phase, thereby displacing the liquid bound to the porous solid phase towards the second end and releasing this liquid from the second end. Recovery of liquid from the solid phase using such methods is increased compared with corresponding methods in which no liquid seal is formed. In preferred embodiments, the liquid used to form the liquid seal is a mineral oil. The methods have particular application in nucleic acid extractions which utilise capture of nucleic acid to a solid phase. Kits and apparatus for performing the methods are also described.
