    • An ultrasonic inspection apparatus is disclosed for inspecting coextruded plastic sheet as it is produced. The apparatus includes support for the sheet to be inspected and support for an ultrasonic transducer adjacent the surface of said sheet. A housing supports the ultrasonic transducer adjacent the sheet and defines a chamber between the face of the transducer and the surface of the sheet. The chamber is provided with an interfacing fluid so that ultrasonic pulses from the transducer will pass through the fluid into the sheet to be reflected from any interface therein. The ultrasonic transducer and interfacing fluid are moved across the surface of the sheet to permit inspection of the entire sheet. Means are provided within the fluid chamber for directing interfacing fluid substantially transversely across the face of the transducer to remove any air bubbles that may form between the transducer face and the sheet. The ultrasonic pulse echoes received from the sheet may be analyzed to provide an indication of the presence and depth of interfaces in the sheet.

If the total circumferential dimension is greater than one wavelength at the intended operating frequency, then a corporate structured feedline provides plural spaced-apart feedpoints about the circumference so as to achieve a substantially uniform distribution of r.f. field amplitudes and phases about the circumference.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for remotely connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting a flexible communication member between two spaced apart bodies which are in predetermined relative positions to one another within given tolerances, and more particularly, to the connecting of an electrical connector to a carried spacecraft from an orbiter while providing for a minimum transfer of energy therebetween. A remote actuation of an electrical connector between two bodies is accomplished by driving an extendable member carrying a detachable connector from one of the bodies into mating contact with a fixed connector on the other body. A locking means associated with the other body retains the detachable connector in such mating contact while the extendable member is withdrawn. A flexible cable is first secured between said one of the bodies and the detachable connector.

    • A support for a cryogen container, particularly adapted for use in spacecraft, provides a dual support. One portion of the structure supports the container in the absence of acceleration force, and the other portion of the structure supports the container in the presence of acceleration forces.     • A multilayered structure is described that is useful in making containers, the structure having at least one low gas permeable layer specifically located in the multilayered structure so that there is substantial reduction in the formation of unwanted inclusions formed during coextrusion processes. In particular, the structure is a tubular body which comprises a plurality of layers of different polymeric materials united or bonded together, said structure having at least one uncentered layer of low gas permeability, said layer having an average thickness in the range of about 1 to 20 percent of the total thickness of the body. The structure may be readily made by forming a series of melted thermoplastic streams, enveloping the series of melted streams to successively form separate and defined layers one upon the other, and introducing a layer of low gas permeable material into the series proximate the exterior portion of the structure. The low gas permeable material may be polyvinylidene chloride copolymer, poly(vinyl alcohol-coethylene) or acrylonitrile-containing polymers.

    • A programmable control signal generator controls the overall speed of an I.S. machine, the timing of sequential functions of each individual section, and the relative phasing of the IS machine sections. A time-based drive signal, derived from the time base signal of the programmable control signal generator, is applied to a stepper motor which is coupled to a gob feeder and plunger mechanism and a conveyor mechanism through respective gear reducers. The pulse repetition rate of the drive signal is controlled manually from an operator's speed control station or automatically from a computer to establish and vary the machine speed. The programmable control signal generator also provides a timing signal, coordinated with the drive signal, to time the sequential functions of the sections as a function of the number of elapsed time increments into which a machine cycle is divided. The timing signal has a pulse repetition rate which is preferably a calculated ratio of the repetition rate of the drive signal. In addition, the programmable control signal generator provides a cycle reference signal, coordinated with the drive signal, to control phasing of the sections. The reference signal has a pulse repetition rate which is preferably a calculated ratio of the repetition rate of the timing signal.
