    • A method and apparatus perform call control by obtaining initial biometric information of ears of a user of a handheld audio device; detecting a change in the biometric information of the ears of the user; determining a position and motion of the handheld audio device by analyzing the detected change in biometric information; and performing call control based on the determined position and motion.     • The VoIP quality speech process is activated when a subscriber accesses a speech quality sensitive resource or in response to an activation of the feature by the subscriber, or when it is determined that the originating subscriber terminal device requires the transmission of high quality speech signals. A transmit buffer, associated with the port circuit that serves the originating device, stores a predetermined number of packets as they are transmitted from the originating device. In the case of lost or damaged packets, the VoIP quality speech system activates the transmit buffer to retransmit the missing or damaged packet to the destination device. Intelligent buffer management is provided, where the destination device can regulate the size of the transmit buffer as well as the size of its jitter buffer.

    • A system for reconstructing missing packets in a packetized audio TTY stream that includes: (a) an input 328 operable to receive a plurality of first packets, each comprising one or more TTY tones in a sequence of TTY tones; and (b) a processor 332 operable to: (i) order the packets; (ii) depacketize the TTY tones in the plurality of first packets; (iii) determine when a TTY tone is missing from the sequence of TTY tones; (iv) when a TTY tone is missing, perform at least one of the following steps: (1) determine the a TTY tone based on a portion of the tone contained in an adjacent packet; and (2) determine the a TTY tone based on one of(i) a random or pseudo-random tone selection, (ii) a comparison of a first probability associated with a first TTY character generated from a first tone substituted for the missing a TTY tone with a second probability associated with a second TTY character generated from a second tone substituted for the missing TTY tone, and/or (iii) a comparison of a first ordering of TTY characters comprising the first TTY character and a second ordering of TTY characters comprising the second TTY character with a library of TTY character orderings.

    • To assist with the usability of voice messaging systems, a technique is provided that provides audible information to a user about the status of one or more messages in the system. An audible message is played to the user indicating whether they have forwarded, replied, saved, or otherwise addressed a voice message. The audible indication can be triggered by the message recipient trying to reply, forward or otherwise access a message in the voice messaging system. This can be especially useful when the voice messaging system is accessed from a phone, such as an IP telephone or SIP phone. The technique at least allows users to know which voice messages they have addressed as well as to provide a summary of one or more messages in the voice messaging system such as 3 unread, 2 replied, 1 forwarded, and a total of 12 messages with message duration of 11 minutes.

    • The system generates a first data stream which represents a data signal. The first data stream is encoded via a first encoding technique. The first data stream comprises one or more packets with a duration and timestamp. The data signal is encoded into a second data stream using a different encoding technique with a corresponding packet in the second data stream. A packet in the second data stream has the same duration and timestamp as the corresponding packet in the first data stream.The first data stream is sent on a first network. The second data stream is sent on a second network. The first and second data streams are received. A missing/delayed packet in the first data stream is detected. The data signal is regenerated using the first data stream and the packet from the second data stream that corresponds to the missing/delayed packet in the first data stream.

    • A communication system receives data that does not pertain to an attempted initial establishment of a communication. The communication system uses a new message format under an existing analog Caller ID standard. The communication system inserts the data (which can be in addition to existing Caller ID data) into a Caller ID message that uses the new message format. The communication system then sends the Caller ID message to a communication device/Private Branch Exchange (PBX)/contact center that can interpret the new message format. The communication device/PBX/contact center can use the data to further route the communication to a specific telephone and/or can use the data to display information such as Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of a cell phone. The data can enhance the capabilities of devices and systems that currently work under the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
