    • The invention provides a method and apparatus for rapid and accurate stylus overhang positioning and tangential alignment with respect to a turntable. Accordingly a stylus locater plate having an aperture and a stylus positioning mark spaced therefrom is mounted on the spindle of a turntable. A pivot arm is connected to the locater plate on the other side of said spindle from the stylus positioning mark. The pivot arm and thus the locater plate, are then rotated around the spindle until such arm crosses over the pivot axis of the stylus arm of the turntable, to locate the mark in the turntable. The stylus arm is then pivoted toward the mark and the stylus cartridge is adjusted in the stylus arm to position the stylus in registration with such mark.The locater plate is further provided with lines near such mark to guide the angular positioning of the stylus cartridge into a tangential alignment with the record grooves at such mark.

    • A stylus guard assembly for use with a phonograph pick-up cartridge, which assembly includes a cam member, a manually operated lever with a pivot operating arm and walls providing detent surfaces. The pivot operating arm is disposed at an angle to a lever which engages a curved cam slot on a stylus guard. When the lever is manually displaced through its designated travel, the movement at the end of the arm, through the action of the cam mechanism, causes the guard to rotate on its pivot from one position to another. In one position, the guard is retracted to expose the stylus. In both positions, the guard is held in place by the detent mechanism. The manually operated lever produces a visual indication of the stylus guard position, which shows whether the stylus guard is in the position to allow the stylus tip to engage with the recording or is in the position to protect the stylus when not in use.

    • A gramophone pick-up arm has a balance weight arrangement which comprises a selectable number of lead laminations contained in a molded plastic box constituting a main balance weight casing which is adjustable in two directions, one direction being aligned with the axis of the arm at its pivotal and rotational bearings and the second direction being aligned with the pivotal axis of the arm. Light weight plastic spacers may be included in the box to prevent the lead laminations from moving about therewithin. The main balance weight casing carries a pair of flanking rider weights arranged laterally with respect to the length of the arm, one of the rider weights being provided with a micrometer screw adjustment whereby its position relative to the main balance weight casing can be precisely set for fine control, and the other rider weight providing coarse control and being indexable between forward and rearward limiting positions. Apart from the weights per se, all components of the balance weight arrangement are formed of precision molded glass or carbon fiber loaded plastic, as also is a bearing carrier into which the arm proper plugs, and from which the balance weight arrangement is adjustably carried, and integral with which are knife-edge bearing portions. The arm proper is a titanium tube processed in an atmosphere of nitrogen so as to develop a hard titanium nitride outer layer.
