    • A high-impact, energy-absorbing vehicle barrier system generally includes a substantially rigid outer containment wall coupled via strap assemblies with an energy-absorbing inner impact wall, and energy-absorbing cartridges strategically positioned between the impact wall and containment wall. The impact wall is constructed of a number of tubes coupled with one another to present a substantially smooth, uniform surface to passing vehicles. The energy-absorbing cartridges generally consist of a foam member or a number of foam sheets which compress and crush between the containment wall and impact wall to absorb energy from an errant vehicle striking the face of the impact wall, while the deflection and deformation of the impact wall tubes dissipates additional energy to reduce peak decelerations and mitigate the severity of high-energy vehicular impacts. Internal splice units and the strap assemblies provide for relatively easy and quick replacement of damaged impact wall sections and energy-absorbing cartridges.

    • An adaptable barrier system protects a site of value that is adjacent to a trafficable surface, from impact by a vehicle. The system includes traffic patterns to reduce speed, followed by a first impact element that causes a vehicle to become elevated from the trafficable surface. A bed having a deformable structure or material beyond the first impact element lowers the elevation of a vehicle that encounters the bed. A cover overlies the compressible material to allow passage of pedestrians and lightweight vehicles. An impact element line beyond the bed has sufficient height to impact a chassis of the vehicle having an elevation that is lowered by the bed, and prevent further progress of the vehicle. The combination of the first impact element, the bed and the impact elements line may be reproportioned with respect to each other to provide a barrier intended to suit a particular application.

    • An improved crash attenuator that uses a cable and shock arresting cylinder arrangement to control the rate at which a vehicle impacting the crash attenuator is decelerated to a safe stop is disclosed. The crash attenuator is comprised of a front section and a plurality of mobile sections with overlapping angular corrugated side panels. When the crash attenuator is impacted by a vehicle, the front section and mobile sections telescope down in response, and thus, are effectively longitudinally collapsed. For this purpose, the sections are slidably mounted on at least one guiderail that is attached to the ground. Positioned preferably between two guiderails is the cable and cylinder arrangement that exerts a force on the front section to resist the backward movement of the front section when struck by an impacting vehicle using a varying restraining force to control the rate at which an impacting vehicle is decelerated to safely stop the vehicle. The side panels can also be used in a guardrail configuration. A variety of transition arrangements to provide a smooth continuation from the crash attenuator to a fixed obstacle protected by the crash attenuator.

    • A safety barrier for road use comprises a barrier element (5) which can be displaced between an operative position, above the road surface, and an inoperative position, in which it does not substantially project above the road surface. Preferably provided is a number of sets of aligned barrier elements, rigidly connected to one another, the adjacent sets being connected together by articulated connecting structures (18) which enable one set of barrier elements (5) to be displaced between its inoperative position and its operative position without modifying the positions of the adjacent sets. In this way, one or more stretches of the barrier can be brought into the inoperative condition, leaving the adjacent stretches of barrier in the normal operative condition. The invention is particularly, although not exclusively, suited for the construction of traffic-divider barriers in road tunnels where it is necessary to eliminate the barrier rapidly in the event of an accident occurring.
