    • A polyester is provided which facilitates the separation of blood into light and heavy phases via centrifugation in a blood collection vessel. The polyester is useful as a component of a partitioning composition formulated to have appropriate specific gravity to be positioned intermediate the light and heavy blood phases during centrifugation. The polyester composition can be prepared with relative ease compared to prior art polyesters useful in blood partitioning compositions. The polyesters of this invention comprise a dicarboxylic acid member, a polymeric fatty acid, a diol member and a moiety having at least one polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond and at least one functional group capable of reacting with the ends of the polyester chain. The polyesters have a lower viscosity when synthesized and are later cured to increase their viscosity to the desired level.

    • Cytocentrifugation apparatus is improved by providing centrifuging devices with a plurality of liquid-receiving chambers arranged serially along and opening into an elongate conduit leading to and terminating within a filter-pad-holder so that a filter-pad-prewetting liquid can be passed along such conduit and into a liquid-flow opening of a filter pad held by such holder in advance of passage along said conduit and through such liquid-flow opening in the filter pad of a cell-carrying liquid sample during a centrifugation run of the apparatus. Retention of prewetting liquid in the filter pad around the sample liquid flow helps to prevent loss of cells to the filter pad. Various other structural modifications of the cytocentrifugation device and filter pads used therewith also help to prevent loss of cells to the filter pad.

    • The invention discloses a machine for the filtering of solid, in particular fibrous, particles suspended in liquids, including a delivery chamber (2) collecting the liquid to be treated, a raceway (3) leading the liquid to be treated into a treatment chamber (4) having a cylindrical bottom (5), wherein there is at least one pair of revolving filters (6, 7), an overflow chamber (16) connected with a recycling tank and an area (21) for the discharge of the recovered solid particles. In the machine each filter (12) has a surface in the shape of a truncated cone and its horizontal axis is essentially perpendicular to the flow direction of the liquid to be treated, the two filters are coaxial with each other and face each other, so as to form a concave space (20) therebetween. The taper of the filters causes the double effect of increasing the filtering performance of the machine and of avoiding its standstill when the delivery of liquid to be treated increases.

    • In a disk-type decker that is employed to drain suspensions and that has axially distributed suspension chambers and filtrate chambers that are separated by rotating screen disks and open into a stationary tub, the filtrate chambers are evacuated to increase the throughput of the decker and improve and accelerate drainage. The filtrate chambers are for this purpose divided by radial and axial transverse partitions into individual filtrate-chamber sections distributed along the circumference and sealed off from one another. When the screen disks and hence the filtrate-chamber sections rotate and the sections enter into flow engagement with filtrate outlets at the bottom of the decker, they are simultaneously evacuated, accelerating drainage through the disks. The results are a higher throughput, a lower material density in the filtrate, and lower specific investment costs at the same throughput or material density in the filtrate. The filtrates can be separated because the filtrate outlets are divided along the circumference.
