    • A communications system offering telephone number portability services, where a subscriber of a ported telephone number is able to maintain existing voice mail services from an existing end office switching system, independent of the new end office switching system serving the ported telephone number. The end office switching system accessing the voice mail system includes ported number forwarding logic. Using this logic, that office sends a signaling message via a common channel interoffice signaling network. A calling party field of the message specifies the ported telephone number (i.e., the actual called number), instead of the actual calling party number. The end office switching system serving the voice mail system, also referred to as the accessed end office switching system, receives the signaling message, extracts the ported telephone number from the calling party field, and forwards the ported telephone number information to the voice mail system. The information is forwarded to the voice mail system across a data link interface according to a protocol that is independent of any predetermined range of provisioned exchanges.

    • A method is provided which reduces post-dial delay in a number portability environment. In particular, a switching office which controls call routing to portable numbers (NPA-NXXs) contains a cache for which location routing number response information may be stored. The processing office concurrently checks the cache for LRN response information corresponding to the dialed number and launches a query to a number portability database. Thus, if the LRN response information in the cache is valid then the call will be routed in the timeliest manner. However, if either the cache does not have any LRN response information or the LRN response information in the cache proves not to be valid then, the switching office will have received the LRN response information from the database more quickly based on the concurrent launching of a query. Therefore, a more timely attempt at establishing a proper connection to the dialed number will occur thereby reducing post-dial delay.

    • A method and apparatus for providing subscriber alerts that warn the subscriber to severe weather and traffic conditions is provided wherein the subscriber may receive the alerts on a cellular phone, on a public switched telephone network phone (PSTN), on a pager, or by e-mail. A server, e.g., an SCP or IP, generates signaling to prompt an autodialer to dial a call to the subscriber and an IVR to play the select message. With respect to the wakeup and reminder services, the IVR contains a list of recordings in celebrity voices that serve to remind or wakeup the subscriber at a designated time. To generate the various types of alerts, a plurality of weather sensor systems are coupled to the IP or to the SCP to provide weather information thereto. Additionally, a plurality of traffic sensors are coupled to deliver traffic flow information to the SCP or IP. The types of weather sensing systems included Doppler Radar and Satellite based systems. the types of Traffic flow monitoring sensors include radar and infrared speed measuring devices as well as passive flow measuring devices.

    • A telephone network includes an Enhanced Call Routing (ECR) function that reroutes calls when the high usage route and fixed tandem routes are overloaded or otherwise unavailable. The ECR function tracks the operation of the telephone network on the basis of origination switches and destination switches and provides temporary network rerouting during outages and unusual loading situations. Further, the ECR function supports Local Number Portability (LNP) so that it may operate in those telephone networks that are designed and/or modified to support LNP. The ECR function resides on a signaling network element such as a Service Switching Point (SSP) and/or a Service Control Point (SCP). A call setup request is received by a Service Switching Point (SSP), an origination switch in the traffic network, and intended for a destination switch. Initial routing via a high usage route and fixed tandem route(s) are unsuccessful. The SSP sends a Network_Busy message to the STP/SCP supporting the ECR function. The ECR function then attempts to determine an alternate tandem route for the call. If successful, the ECR function directs the SSP to route the call along the alternate tandem route, the alternate tandem route either being via the telephone network or via an alternate telephone network coupled thereto. If not successful, the ECR directs the SSP to send the call to a resource for caller notification. In another operation, the ECR function monitors the number of Network_Busy messages received for each originating switch/destination switch pair in the telephone network.

    • An exchange is provided. Particularly, an office data management system where exchanges in a switching network can be operated and managed in common, a system for assigning personal numbers to subscribers, and a same subscriber's number migrating system where the same subscriber's number can be used even after a subscriber is sifted from an exchange to another are provided. A certain exchange acting as a master in a station allots a copy of the common office data to each node via a data-link control circuit (FCCH) that transmits and receives call control signals and maintenance signals. A subscriber personal number assigning system that assigns a number to a person, not to a telephone set, by allocating a number to a logical index to the common office data, instead of a physical telephone set, is employed to the common office data. In the case of a subscriber's relocation, the same number can be migrated by arbitrarily changing a physical telephone set to a logical index existing in the common office data according to directions from a centralized maintenance terminal.

    • A telephone network redirects calls intended for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to one of a plurality of available Internet Protocol (IP) gateways operated by the ISP. A call is received by the telephone network at an originating switch from a subscriber's calling terminal, the call directed to a toll-free-number or a central number (TFN) for the subscriber's ISP. The originating switch interacts with the signaling network via a coupled service switching point (SSP) to request a Dialed Number (DN) corresponding to the TFN. A destination switch (or a Private Branch Exchange “PBX” coupled to the destination switch), instead of completing the call, redirects the call to a new IP gateway coupled to a new destination switch or coupled PBX. The call is then routed from the calling terminal to the new IP gateway via the originating switch and the new destination switch via a lowest point in the traffic network.
