    • A virtual learning system environment which provides for progressive education of children, at their own pace, through enhancement in both language arts (e.g. spelling, reading comprehension) and physical skills (interactive prompts). The system of this invention includes a microphone for sensing an audible word or command, a video camera for sensing bodily movement, and means for effecting a computer generated response to said audible word or command, or said bodily movement, wherein said response includes both graphical depiction of the letters of said audible word or command, an object image corresponding to bodily movement or said audible word or command, and an action or object related to said bodily movement or said audible word or command, or any combination thereof, so as to effect a progressive learning or teaching experience. The system also provides for direction to a pathway alternative to said system based upon a series of links, similar to the Encarta Encyclopedia, to web pages and the like, where it directs the child to additional sources of information concerning the one or more aspects of the learning exercise. In addition, the system allows for a live or computer mediator to monitor the progress of the learning experience.

    • A method for turning pages of a multi-purpose learning system comprising a picture book package in a form of a cassette having a memory, a main body having a number of controllers for reading data stored in said memory, an audio/video output unit having a monitor and a speaker for outputting audio and video signals processed by said controllers. The method includes the steps of setting circuits of the main body to a standby mode, displaying a starting display having page icons which can be selected by an user to turn pages to proceed in interacting with the multi-purpose learning system, determining whether one of said page icons displayed on the starting display is selected by the user, and outputting the corresponding server display data of the selected page to the audio/video output unit for a visual display. Since the page icons can be displayed in the starting display on the monitor to be selected by the user, a more simplified multi-purpose system possible to have a virtually unlimited maximum number of pages can be provided.

    • The present invention provides a method for analyzing reading skills comprised of recording and digitizing sound waves generated by a subject's voice in response to a series of stimuli. The sound waves are decomposed into sequences of articulation and pause periods. The articulation and pause periods are determined by first scanning the generated sound waves and identifying locatians among the sound waves where the sound amplitude raises above or drops bellow a given value. The reading ability of the subject is profiled by analyzing the series of pause and/or articulation periods. The method allows for the diagnosis of reading deficiencies. Based on the diagnosed deficiencies in the subject's reading skills, drill exercises are proposed and rounds of testing and drill exercising are repeated until the diagnosed reading deficiencies are corrected. The method is particularly suitable for use in conjunction with computerized equipment. A particular type of tests used in conjunction with this invention is the Reading Automatized Naming test (R.A.N.). The method and device of this application comprise presenting a subject with a set of R.A.N.

    • A computer based interactive method and apparatus for teaching vocabulary words. In particular, a vocabulary game aimed at preparing children for the SAT. The vocabulary game comprises a synonym matching game which provides audio and visual reinforcement of words, their definitions, and dialogue that uses the word, and requires the user to physically interact (i.e. select words, approve word choices, and the like).
