    • Apparatus for cutting and guiding the marginal or lead-in strip formed in a paper web and used in connection with a lead-in operation thereof includes first and second guide plates extending at an angle relative to each other and with which are associated nozzle tubes in which nozzle apertures or the like are formed for directing air jets parallel to the first and second guide plates. The first guide plate is oriented so as to correspond to the direction in which the end of the paper web is to be conducted onwardly after severance of at least the forward portion of the lead-in strip. The second guide plate is oriented in a direction which corresponds to that in which the marginal or lead-strip is conducted into a pulper or the like. Air jets are directed from the nozzle apertures over the respective guide plates so that the latter act as guiding and air transport surfaces so that the marginal lead-in strip is pulled in different directions in the area of the guide plates until it is severed. The new end of the web or marginal lead-in strip is conducted onward under the guidance of the first guide plate. A guide plate element is preferably provided forming a continuation of the first guide plate in order to guide the new end of the web or marginal strip onwards to subsequent guiding apparatus.

    • Apparatus for removing tail flash from molded plastic articles, such as containers or bottles, in which a pair of reciprocatory jaw assemblies are formed with meshing teeth which engage the flash from opposite sides and subsequently tear the flash from the article. The jaw assemblies are formed with meshing tooth-like projections which engage flash from opposite sides at spaced locations along the line of juncture between the web of flash and the surface of the article. Inclined cam surfaces on one jaw assembly urge a flash web engaged between the teeth of the closing jaws outwardly away from the article to tear the flash clear of the article.

    • A tape tearing device for removably applying to a roll of pressure sensitive tape comprises a generally U-shaped cutter including a blade affixed to the web of the cutter, the web terminating endwardly in a pair of depending, integral legs. The legs terminate downwardly in inwardly projecting shoulders suitable to loosely grip the core of a roll of tape. The legs are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the width of the roll of tape and the shoulders extend inwardly a predetermined distance to define a clear space therebetween that is less than the width of the tape whereby the tape tearing device may be easily applied to a roll of tape by slightly spreading the legs and then the device is retained in association therewith by the natural spring bias of the legs.

    • This invention relates to a method of tearing sections from a continuous web of fibers without causing compression of the fibers at the severance line by grasping the web at spaced portions adjacent to the tearing area, and moving one portion relative to the other portion to stress and tear the web. An apparatus for accomplishing the tearing includes two juxtaposed pairs of jaws, or the like, which receive and engage an intermittently advanced web. One pair of jaws is then displaced from the juxtaposed position to stress and tear the web. The stressing and tearing action substantially eliminates any densified layer or thickened portions between the ends of the section and the engagement line while the engagement of the web creates a transverse densified line near the ends of the sections.
