At least one embodiment of the present invention includes a data processing system with one or more sensors (e.g., physical sensors such as tachometer and thermistors, and logical sensors such as CPU load) for fine grain control of one or more components (e.g., processor, fan, hard drive, optical drive) of the system for working conditions that balance various goals (e.g., user preferences, performance, power consumption, thermal constraints, acoustic noise). In one example, the clock frequency and core voltage for a processor are actively managed to balance performance and power consumption (heat generation) without a significant latency. In one example, the speed of a cooling fan is actively managed to balance cooling effort and noise (and/or power consumption).

摘要： In a trench-gated MOSFET including an epitaxial layer over a substrate of like conductivity and trenches containing thick bottom oxide, sidewall gate oxide, and conductive gates, body regions of the complementary conductivity are shallower than the gates, and clamp regions are deeper and more heavily doped than the body regions but shallower than the trenches. Zener junctions clamp a drain-source voltage lower than the FPI breakdown of body junctions near the trenches, but the zener junctions, being shallower than the trenches, avoid undue degradation of the maximum drain-source voltage. The epitaxial layer may have a dopant concentration that increases step-wise or continuously with depth. Chained implants of the body and clamp regions permits accurate control of dopant concentrations and of junction depth and position. Alternative fabrication processes permit implantation of the body and clamp regions before gate bus formation or through the gate bus after gate bus formation.

摘要： An structure for electrically isolating a semiconductor device is formed by implanting dopant into a semiconductor substrate that does not include an epitaxial layer. Following the implant the structure is exposed to a very limited thermal budget so that dopant does not diffuse significantly. As a result, the dimensions of the isolation structure are limited and defined, thereby allowing a higher packing density than obtainable using conventional processes which include the growth of an epitaxial layer and diffusion of the dopants. In one group of embodiments, the isolation structure includes a deep layer and a sidewall which together form a cup-shaped structure surrounding an enclosed region in which the isolated semiconductor device may be formed. The sidewalls may be formed by a series of pulsed implants at different energies, thereby creating a stack of overlapping implanted regions.

The modem may apply a power cutback to enable simultaneous use of the modem and a telephone. The modem determines if the modem's power after the cutback is sufficient to support data communication with the central office. If the power is insufficient, the modem gradually reduces the power cutback, checks the sufficiency of the power again, and repeats this cycle. The modem repeats the cycle until the modem attains an acceptable transmit power where the power requirements for data transfer and noise reduction are balanced.

The ejection charge is ignited by an electric squib which is detonated by voltage from a sea water battery. The battery is sealed from sea water until a valve opens to permit entry of water into the fuze body. An electronic deplay module is electrically connected between the sea water battery and squib to delay detonation of the ejection charge until the signaling device has assumed a stable vertical position at the water surface.

摘要： A non-polluting, non-pyrolytic process to increase the electrical energy derived from coal comprises the reacting of coal with water at a sufficient temperature to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen with the further processing of the carbon monoxide to formate and the reacting of the formate and the hydrogen in separate fuel cells to generate electric current, water, and hydroxide, wherein the water and the hydroxide are recycled back into the initial coal-water reaction and the carbon monoxide-hydroxide reaction to provide further feedstocks for electrical power generation. Since the process does not involve combustion, the common air-pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen and linear and aromatic carbonaceous free radicals, are not released into the atmosphere.
