    • A proximal end of a lead body carries a connector assembly. A first electrical conductor within the lead body electrically connects a tip electrode to a first electrical contact on the connector assembly. A collar electrode is carried by a distal end portion of the lead body. A second electrical conductor within the lead body electrically connects the collar electrode to a second electrical contact on the connector assembly. A ring electrode, carried by the distal end portion of the lead body, is disposed proximally of the collar electrode in spaced-apart relationship thereto and is connected through a switching device to a node point along the first conductor. The switching device has a first state permitting an electrical current to be conducted between the ring electrode and the node point and a second state in which the ring electrode is electrically isolated from the node point. Preferably, the switching device comprises a diode.

    • Techniques for enabling both preventive overdrive pacing and antitachycardia pacing (ATP) within an implantable device are provided. The device gains the benefits of overdrive pacing for preventing the onset of a tachycardia and, if one nevertheless occurs, ATP is employed to terminate the tachycardia. In particular, a technique is provided for promptly detecting the onset of atrial tachycardia during preventive overdrive pacing based on loss of capture of atrial pacing pulses. A technique is also provided for using detection of loss of capture of atrial or ventricular pacing pulses to trigger automatic switching from overdrive pacing to ATP. A setup technique determines whether to enable the automatic switching from overdrive pacing to ATP within a particular patient. Also, techniques are provided for verifying loss of capture of atrial or ventricular backup pacing pulses and for detecting low amplitude ventricular fibrillation based on loss of capture of ventricular backup pacing pulses.

    • A technique is provided for filtering far-field electrical cardiac signals from near-field signals. Atrial tip and ring signals are sensed using unipolar electrodes and any timing differences between corresponding events within the signals are detected. Then, far-field signals are filtered from the tip and ring signals based on the detected timing differences, such that substantially only near-field atrial signals remain. The technique exploits the fact that near-field atrial signals are sensed when a conduction wave passes by the atrial electrodes. In contrast, far-field signals from the ventricles propagate to the atrium at near the speed of light. Hence, any significant timing difference between corresponding events appearing in the atrial signals is indicative of a near-field event, whereas the lack of a significant timing difference is indicative of a far-field event. In one example, a sense amplifier is provided with a Boolean logic circuit to aid in time delay-based filtering.
